Checking Your Cuts with a Square Before You Commit

ok. we've cut the legs, we've measured them three times, we've talked about why square matters more than you think. now we actually check the work before glue goes anywhere near it.

this is the lesson people want to skip. you already cut the piece, it looks fine, you want to move on to the fun part. i get it. but this five-minute check is the difference between a table that sits flat and one that rocks on the floor for the next ten years while you shove a folded napkin under one leg.

what you need

a combination square or a small try square. that's it for this lesson. if you don't have one yet, this is the tool i'd tell you not to cheap out on — same as the doweling jig i talked about a few lessons back. a square that's off by even a degree will lie to you with total confidence, and you won't know it's lying.

the actual check

  1. check your saw before you check your board. set the square against the base plate and the blade. if there's a gap anywhere, your saw isn't cutting square no matter how careful you are, and every cut after that is fighting you. i check mine at the start of every project. takes ten seconds.
  1. check the end of the board itself. lay the square against the factory edge, slide it up to your cut line, and look for light coming through anywhere. any gap means the cut's off. sight down it too — sometimes you'll see daylight before you can feel it with your fingers.
  1. check corner to corner on assembled pieces. once you've got an apron and a leg together, or a frame dry-fit, measure diagonal to diagonal. both diagonals should match. if one's longer, the whole thing is racked, even if every individual board measured perfectly. this is the check people forget. you can have four perfectly cut, perfectly square boards and still end up with a parallelogram.
  1. don't trust your eye, even when it looks right. i've stood there sure a joint was square, put the tool on it, and found an eighth of an inch of gap. the board doesn't care what you think you cut it to. the square doesn't care either. it just tells you the truth.

sebastian's question

my nephew sebastian asked me once why i don't just use screws for everything since it's faster, and honestly i didn't have a great answer for him in the moment. i mumbled something about it being "better" and left it there. it bugged me enough that i spent the next weekend actually testing it — built two versions of the same joint, one doweled, one screwed, and racked them by hand to see which gave first.

the doweled one held. by a lot, actually, more than i expected.

but here's the part that connects to today: none of that mattered if the pieces weren't square going in. a doweled joint on an out-of-square cut is still an out-of-square joint, just a strong one. squareness comes first. the joinery method is the second decision, not the first.

a real caution here

if you're checking a cut and find it's off, don't try to shave it square with sandpaper or a hand plane unless it's a hair, like a sixteenth of an inch at most. i've watched people — and been the person — try to sand away a quarter inch of error and lose an hour proving to themselves it doesn't work. you cannot sand out a real gap. if the square shows daylight, recut it. it's a shorter afternoon than fighting it.

also, when you're checking a cut with the square right after using the saw, let the blade stop spinning first. sounds obvious. people get impatient anyway.

my opinion on this, plainly

measure everything, trust nothing, including your own last cut. i say this every module because it's true every module. the square is not there to confirm what you already believe. it's there to catch you when you're wrong, and you will be wrong sometimes. everybody is.
