The Doweling Jig and Getting Your Holes to Line Up

ok. last lesson was about why a doweled joint holds up better than glue and screws alone. this lesson is the part where that actually works, or where it falls apart on you, depending on whether your holes line up.
that's the whole game with dowels. it's not the drilling that's hard. it's getting the hole in board one to land in exactly the same spot as the hole in board two. off by a sixteenth of an inch and the joint still closes up fine but it's fighting you the whole time. off by more than that and you're not assembling a joint, you're forcing two boards to argue with each other.
why i don't eyeball this one
i tried it early on. marked both boards with a pencil and a square, drilled by hand, figured close enough. it was not close enough. dowels bound up going in, joints didn't sit flush, one board pulled slightly out of square from the pressure. that's a jig job, not a by-hand job. get a doweling jig. i'll say the same thing i said back in the pocket-hole module: buy the decent one the first time. i bought a cheap jig my first year and fought it for months, drilling holes that looked right and never lined up, before i figured out the problem wasn't me, it was thirty dollars of loose tolerances in the jig itself. bought a better one and the problem just disappeared. that was an expensive way to learn a cheap lesson.
setting up the jig
- clamp your two boards together, edges flush, the way they'll actually sit in the finished joint. if you're doweling a tabletop edge-to-edge, clamp them face to face like a book closing. if it's a rail into a leg, clamp them in that same orientation.
- mark your hole centers across both boards at once, with a square, while they're clamped together. one pencil line, one square, both boards. this is the whole trick. if you mark them separately you've already introduced error before you've drilled anything.
- set the jig to your board thickness. most jigs have a stop or a guide you dial in, same idea as setting up a pocket-hole jig for your material. check it against a scrap piece first. don't trust the numbers on the jig, trust what it actually does to a test board.
- drill your test holes in scrap first. always. put a dowel in each hole and see if the two pieces come together flush. if they don't, adjust before you touch your real material.
- drill your actual boards, keeping the jig registered against the same reference edge every time. if board one references off the top edge, board two references off the top edge too. mixing reference edges is a fast way to get holes that are each individually perfect and still don't match.
- depth matters as much as position. set a depth stop or wrap a piece of tape around your bit so you're not drilling clean through the other side. i've done that. it's not a fun surprise.
dry fit before glue, every time
put dowels in without glue, clamp it up, check it's flush and square. this takes two minutes and it is the two minutes that saves you from anecdote number seven.
that's the one where i was doweling into a piece of pine and got a little heavy-handed clamping the joint tight. pine's soft. i didn't respect that. i cranked the clamps down like i was closing up oak and split the board right down the joint line. clean crack, right where the dowel holes were, because that's the weakest point in the board and I'd just put a bunch of pressure right there. lesson was simple: clamp it snug, not brutal, especially in softer wood. you want the joint pulled tight, you don't need to see the wood bow around the clamp to know it's tight.
a real caution here too: when you're drilling, keep your fingers well clear of where that bit comes through if you're using a jig that doesn't fully guide the exit side, and don't force the drill if it binds. a bit that grabs in a hole will twist the whole drill in your hand faster than you can let go of the trigger. keep a solid grip, keep steady pressure, let the bit do the cutting.

sebastian's asked me a couple times now why not just screw everything, it's faster. it is faster. but a doweled joint spreads the load across the whole glued surface of the dowel instead of concentrating stress at one screw shank, and it holds tighter over years, not just on day one. i proved that to myself on my own time because i didn't have a good answer for him at first. dowels take longer. they also don't come loose in five years the way a screwed butt joint sometimes does.

grab some scrap and practice marking two boards at once with a square before you clamp them in the jig. get comfortable with that step, because everything downstream depends on it.
