Drilling Depth, Spacing, and Dry-Fitting

ok. jig's lining up now, so let's talk about actually drilling the holes and getting it right before any glue touches the wood.

three things matter here: how deep you drill, where you drill, and whether you check your work before you commit. skip any one of those and you'll be gluing up a joint that doesn't sit flush, and by the time you notice, it's too late to fix without cutting something apart.

depth first

your dowels are a set length, usually 1 to 1.5 inches for furniture-scale joints. your hole needs to be deeper than half the dowel length on each side, not equal to it. i drill mine about an eighth deeper than half the dowel on both pieces. that gives the glue somewhere to go so it's not just sitting at the bottom of the hole pushing back against the dowel when you clamp up.

here's the number that trips people: if you're using a 1.5 inch dowel, you don't drill two 0.75 inch holes. you drill two holes at about 13/16, maybe 7/8. that extra room is for squeeze-out and for the fact that dowels aren't always cut perfectly square on the ends.

most doweling jigs and drill bits have a depth stop, either a collar you tighten on the bit itself or a stop built into the jig. use it. don't try to eyeball depth by watching the bit and pulling out at the right moment. you will be wrong, and you'll be wrong in a different way every single hole, which means your holes won't match each other even if they're all roughly close.

spacing

for a table apron or a shelf edge, i space dowels about 2 inches apart, and i keep them at least an inch off the edge of the board so you're not blowing out the side when you drill. two dowels minimum per joint. one dowel lets the joint rotate a little around that single point, which defeats the whole purpose of using dowels instead of screws in the first place.

mark your centerlines with a square and a pencil before you touch the jig. don't mark one board and assume the other matches — measure both, mark both, and check that your marks land on the same spots when you hold the boards edge to edge. this is the same thing i've said since lesson one. the board doesn't care what you think you measured. check it again.

the jig problem, and buying the tool twice

i want to tell you about my first doweling jig, because it'll save you some money and a lot of frustration.

i bought a cheap one my first year, one of those all-in-one metal jigs that clamps onto the board. and i fought with it for months. holes that should've lined up were off by a sixteenth, sometimes more. i re-marked centerlines, re-checked my square, blamed my technique, blamed the drill, blamed myself for probably a dozen weekends before i figured out the actual problem: the jig itself was junk. the bushings inside it, the metal sleeves that guide the bit, had play in them. the bit could wander inside the guide hole and I'd never know it until the dowel wouldn't seat.

i spent $30 on a better jig and the problem just disappeared overnight. same technique, same hands, same everything. the tool was the whole issue the entire time.

that's the lesson i keep coming back to: buy the tool twice and you paid too much. i'd rather own fewer good things than a drawer full of stuff that almost works. if your holes aren't lining up and you've checked your marks twice and your technique is solid, stop blaming yourself and take a hard look at the jig.

dry-fitting before glue

once your holes are drilled on both pieces, put dowels in without any glue and push the joint together. this is dry-fitting and you do it every single time, no exceptions, even if you're in a hurry.

check three things: - does it sit flush, no gap on either side - does it go together without you having to force it or hammer on it - does it come back apart without a fight

if a dowel's too tight, you can sand it lightly or run it through a pencil sharpener made for dowels, whatever's handy. if a hole's off by more than a sixteenth, you've got a problem to solve now, while it's dry, not after you've got glue setting up on you and no way to take it back apart clean.

one caution here, and it's a real one: if the joint's really stuck and you have to force it apart during a dry fit, do it slowly and watch your fingers. dowels can snap under pressure and whatever you're holding can suddenly come free fast. i've had a board jump when a stuck dowel let go all at once. nobody got hurt, but it startled me enough that i pay attention to it now.

dry-fitting feels like an extra step when you just want to get to glue-up. it isn't extra. it's the step that tells you whether you're about to build something solid or something you'll be re-gluing in two years.
