Richard came to strength training through his knees, not the gym. A couple winters ago the downhills at the point of the mountain started hurting more than they should, so he did what he does with everything and read until the boring, reliable answer showed up: beginners get most of the benefit from a few basic movements done with decent form and a little consistency. He bought two used dumbbells and a set of bands, cleared a corner of the garage, and started with nobody watching. He also bakes, and swears the patience carries over. He's teaching because the real barrier for beginners was never the exercise. It was the room.
