Jason got into map and compass the boring way. His phone died halfway up a canyon, the trail forked, and he stood there feeling like an idiot for twenty minutes. He made it out fine, but it bugged him. So he bought a cheap compass and taught himself out of an old scouting handbook his dad had in a box.
He draws landscapes at night, so reading terrain came naturally. The compass just added numbers to something he could already sort of see. He teaches this because he thinks it's a real gap for people who hike here. He wants you to leave able to find your car.
