Hard Water, Dry Air, and Elevation Around 4,600 Feet
We've covered sun and we've covered soil. Now the three things working against us before we even plant, because if you don't know they're there you'll blame yourself when a plant struggles, and it's not your fault. It's Utah County doing its Utah County thing.
Hard water
If you've noticed white crust on your faucets or a film on your shower door, that's the same water going onto your plants. Our water up here carries a lot of dissolved calcium and magnesium. Not dangerous to plants the way I once thought, most established natives handle it fine, but it does a few things worth knowing.
It leaves mineral buildup on drip emitters over time, part of why my irrigation lines misbehave. I've had emitters clog slow and quiet over a season and I don't notice until a plant's looking rough and I go check and the little thing is basically cemented shut. Worth a walk-through of your system every spring, popping the emitters off and checking they're clear.
Hard water also raises the soil pH a little over years of watering, and some plants that like it more acidic will sulk. Nothing to panic about for a first-year xeriscape bed. Just something running in the background.
Dry air
Our humidity here is low most of the year, and it does something people don't expect: it pulls moisture out of leaves faster than the roots can pull it back from the soil, especially on hot windy afternoons. That's why a plant can look wilted at 3pm and be totally fine by evening. It's not always thirsty, it's just losing water to the air faster than usual. I used to run outside and water everything the second I saw afternoon droop, and I was loving it to death, training roots to stay shallow and lazy instead of digging down where the real moisture is.
Dry air is also why mulch matters so much here specifically. Three inches of wood mulch or gravel over the root zone is the cheapest move you can make for a yard and it's the one almost everybody skips. It slows the evaporation off the soil surface, keeps the roots cooler, and it's maybe an hour of work for a whole season of benefit. Skip the fancy sprinkler upgrade before you skip the mulch.
Elevation
Along the bench here we're sitting around 4,600 feet, a bit higher if you're further up toward the canyon. That thinner air means stronger sun exposure, bigger day-to-night temperature swings, and things drying out faster than the same plant would at a lower, more humid spot. Ever wonder why a plant tag from a national gardening magazine doesn't quite match what happens in your yard? Elevation is a chunk of that answer. Water evaporates faster, soil temperature swings wider, and plants that are borderline hardy elsewhere might not make it here at all.
What to actually do about it
The practical part.
Check your soil, not the calendar, before watering. Stick a finger or a trowel down two or three inches. If it's dry there, water. If it's still damp, leave it. Watering on a schedule regardless of what's happening in the soil is how people overwater in dry air and underwater in a heat wave, both at once, depending on the week.
Water deep and rare instead of shallow and often. Same thing I said about training roots. A long, slow soak that gets down eight inches or so, done every week or two once things are established, beats a five-minute daily sprinkle every time. Deep water pushes roots down looking for it. Shallow water keeps them lazy near the surface where they cook the second it's hot.
Mulch everything you can. Said it above, but worth repeating because it's the single best answer to both the dry air and the hard water problem. It holds moisture in, moderates soil temperature, and means you're not fighting evaporation every single day.
Skip the landscape fabric under gravel. I learned this one the expensive way. Years back I put fabric down under a gravel bed thinking it'd stop weeds forever. What actually happens is windblown dirt and seed land right on top of the gravel, and weeds root straight into that layer, on top of the fabric, with nowhere for their roots to go but sideways and everywhere. You end up with a weed mat you can't pull because the roots are tangled through gravel and cloth both. I ripped out forty feet of that stuff one fall, cursing the whole time. Plain mulch, checked and refreshed every year or two, does a better job and doesn't trap you later.
Watch for buildup on your drip system if you have one. Once a season, walk the line and check the emitters aren't crusted shut. Five-minute job that saves you a dead plant in July.
None of this is complicated. It's mostly about not fighting the place we actually live. Dry air and hard water and elevation aren't obstacles to work around forever, they're just the conditions, and the plants we'll be choosing later in this course already know how to handle them. That's the whole reason to pick things that belong here.
