Elbow into Your Hip: Bracing Your Hands Against the Spin
Okay. You've coned up, you've coned down, and your clay's probably still wobbling a little at the top. That's normal. This lesson is about the thing that actually fixes it, and it's not your hands. It's your elbows.
Here's the problem everybody has at this stage. You've got the clay moving, you're pushing in with your hands, and the clay is winning the argument. It pushes your hands around instead of the other way around. You can feel it happening and you can't stop it, and you start pushing harder, which makes it worse. I watched this happen with Bryan the one time he came in and said "how hard can it be." Twenty minutes later he had clay in his hair and a fist-sized lump on the floor. He was pushing with his arms. Your arms don't have anything to brace against, so the clay just moves them.
The fix is boring and it's not about strength
Lock your elbows into your hips or your thighs. Whatever's in front of you on your body, get your elbow wedged against it, both sides. Now your hands aren't floating out there being pushed around by a spinning lump of mud. They're anchored to your whole body. The clay can't out-muscle your entire skeleton, but it can absolutely out-muscle your forearm.
Try this at home even without clay, just to feel it: sit like you're at the wheel, put your elbows against your hips, and have somebody push on your hands. You'll notice you barely move. Now do it with your elbows out in the air, unsupported, and get pushed the same way. You'll rock right back. That's the whole lesson in one demo.
Steps for bracing while centering
- Sit close enough to the wheel head that your elbows actually reach your body. If you're too far back you can't brace, full stop.
- Wheel speed medium-fast, not top speed. Too fast and even a braced hand gets overwhelmed.
- Elbows into hips or upper thighs, pressed in, not resting there loosely.
- Hands come together around the clay, one hand's heel bracing the other. You're building one stable unit from elbow to fingertip, not two separate hands doing their own thing.
- Apply steady inward pressure and hold it. Don't pulse. Pulsing is you fighting the clay instead of centering it.
- Watch the top of the clay, not your hands. When the wobble at the top disappears, that's centered. It's a specific moment, not a gradual fade, and you'll know it when it happens.
I still remember the first time it actually clicked for me, three weeks into renting hours at that studio. The wobble just stopped, all at once, like someone flipped a switch. I said "oh my heck" out loud to an empty room. Nobody there to see it, which bugged me more than it should have. Point is, you'll feel it as a sudden thing, not a slow one. If it feels slow and mushy you're probably not braced enough and your hands are still doing independent work.
A caution here, plainly
Keep your body weight coming from your shoulders and back through braced arms, not from leaning your whole torso into the clay. People get tired and start using their chest to push. That's how you end up with your face closer to spinning clay and water than you want to be, and it's also a bad habit for your back over a six-week class. Sit up, brace the elbows, let your arms do the work through a locked frame. Take breaks if your forearms are burning. That's a sign of poor bracing, not a sign you need to push harder.
My opinion on this, for what it's worth
Centering is the whole game. I'd rather you spend this entire lesson getting the bracing right on ugly, lopsided lumps of clay than rush to make something that looks like a bowl but wobbles when you pull it up. A centered lump that never becomes anything is more useful to you right now than an off-center bowl. Everyone wants to skip to the fun part. The fun part is easy once this part is solid.
And here's a thing that's connected to bracing that I didn't expect: once you're actually centered and stable, you start noticing the clay's true thickness under your hands, because you're not fighting wobble anymore. I trimmed a bowl too thin once, way later than this stage, poked a hole clean through the bottom with my tool. I just sat there looking at it. Then I cut the whole thing in half to see the wall thickness, because at that point you might as well learn something from it. Bracing well now is what lets you feel that kind of thing later. If your arms are busy fighting the spin, you can't feel anything else the clay's telling you.
