Coning up and coning down to work the clay

Okay. Your clay's stuck down, the wheel's up to speed, and now we're going to make it go up and down before it goes anywhere near a bowl shape. This is coning, and it's the last thing standing between you and actual centering.

Here's the honest version of what coning is. You're squeezing the spinning clay up into a narrower cone, then pushing it back down into a fat mound, a few times in a row. That's it. It looks like you're doing something fancy. You're not. You're just working the clay so every part of it has spun evenly under your hands, because right now, straight out of the bag, it hasn't.

Why you can't skip this

New clay has a memory. It remembers being wedged, cut, slammed onto the wheel head. Different spots in that lump are a little softer or firmer than others, and if you don't work through it, that unevenness shows up later as a wobble you can't fix no matter how hard you push. Coning up and down mixes it, physically, the way kneading bread mixes butter into flour. You're not making a shape yet. You're making the material honest.

Coning up

Wet your hands. Wetter than feels reasonable, honestly — that's just how I run it, some instructors want you controlling your water more than that, but I think dry hands drag and tear at this stage and a beginner doesn't need one more thing fighting them.

Cup both hands around the base of the mound like you're holding a softball. Elbows in, braced against your hips or thighs, not floating out in the air. Squeeze in and up at the same time, steady pressure, and let the clay rise into a cone shape under your palms. Don't grab at the top of the cone to make it taller. The lift comes from squeezing at the bottom and letting the clay have nowhere to go but up.

Watch the top of the cone as it spins. If it's wobbling side to side, that's your clay telling you it's still off-center, and that's fine, that's the whole reason we're doing this.

Coning down

Now push it back down. Same hand position, but this time you're pressing down and slightly out, flattening the cone back into a mound. Use the heel of your hand more than your fingers here. Fingers dig in and leave grooves, and grooves in a mound you're about to cone up again just create new problems for yourself.

Coning down is honestly harder to do cleanly than coning up. Going up feels satisfying, you can see progress. Going down feels like you're undoing your own work. You're not. You're re-mixing it.

Repeat it, don't rush it

Do this three or four times. Up, down, up, down. Each cycle the wobble at the top should get a little smaller. You're watching for that, not counting reps for the sake of counting.

This is the part of the class where I'd rather spend the whole hour here than let anybody move on early. Centering is the whole game. The bowl is easy once the clay's actually centered — coning is how you get there, and rushing it just means you fight the wobble for the rest of the piece.

Your hands will get tired. That's normal, and it's mostly a bracing problem, not a strength problem. If your elbows are floating instead of locked against your body, your hands are doing all the work alone and they'll lose. Brace first, then squeeze.

A word on ugly cones

Your first cones will look lopsided. They might slump to one side mid-lift, or refuse to go up at all and just spread out sideways. That's correct, not a failure. I had a woman in an early class who kept apologizing every time hers came out crooked, sorry, sorry, sorry, under her breath. I told her flat out, everyone's bad at this at first, that's the whole point of the exercise. She let out this breath she'd apparently been holding for twenty minutes and just kept going, quieter after that. I wasn't trying to make her feel better exactly. I was just telling her what was true.

When it's going wrong

If the cone leans hard to one side and won't correct, stop, don't fight it with more speed. Slow the wheel down, re-center your own elbows and seat, and try the cone again from a shorter height. Tall skinny cones are more prone to whipping around off-center. Short and wide is more forgiving while you're learning the motion.

And if clay's flying off in wet flecks while you work — normal, that's just water and centrifugal force, keep your sleeves back and don't wear your good jeans to this class.

Before next time: try to get three clean cone-up, cone-down cycles without stopping to fix your grip halfway through. Doesn't need to look pretty. Just needs to feel like one continuous motion by the third try.
