Loosening tight hips from sitting or squatting

About 20 minutes

Loosening Tight Hips from Sitting or Squatting

Alright. Hips today.

If you've been in the garden with me you know I get tight in the hips from squatting over rows for hours. If you're not a garden person, same deal happens from sitting at a desk all day, or in a truck, or on the couch after work. Hips get tight from staying in one position, whichever position that is.

We already talked about why you move before you stretch. Cold tissue complains instead of lengthening. So we're doing the same thing here, just aimed at hips instead of shoulders and back.

Warm the hips up first, two minutes

1. Marching in place. Stand up, lift your knees one at a time like you're marching, nothing fancy. Twenty seconds. This gets blood into the hip flexors before you ask them to do anything else.

2. Hip circles. Hands on your hips, feet a little wider than shoulder width, and just move your hips in a big slow circle like a hula hoop that's not there. Ten circles one way, ten the other. Feels a little silly. Do it anyway.

3. Standing figure-four taps. Lift one knee up toward your chest, then swing it out to the side, then set it back down. Alternate sides. Ten each leg. This one wakes up the outer hip, which is usually the part that's been asleep all day if you sit a lot.

That's your two minutes. Now the hips are warm enough to actually stretch instead of just complain.

The stretches

Kneeling hip flexor stretch. Kneel on one knee, other foot planted in front of you, like you're about to propose but you're not. Push your hips forward gently until you feel a pull in the front of the hip on the kneeling side. Hold thirty seconds. Switch legs. If your knee doesn't love the hard floor, put a folded towel under it. I use a towel on the kitchen tile more often than I'd like to admit.

Figure-four stretch, seated or lying down. Sit in a chair, cross one ankle over the opposite knee, and lean forward a little from your hips, keeping your back mostly straight. You'll feel it in the outer hip and glute of the crossed leg. Hold thirty seconds, switch. If sitting doesn't work for you, lie on your back and pull the crossed leg toward your chest instead. Same stretch, different position.

Deep squat hold. This one's for the actual squatters — gardeners, anyone who spends time low to the ground. Feet a little wider than hip width, lower into a squat as far as comfortable, heels down if you can manage it. Hold onto a chair or a counter for balance if you need to. Thirty to sixty seconds. This is the one that mimics the actual position that got you tight in the first place, so it tends to help the most and also feel the least comfortable at first. That's the point of the mountain on this one — the first ten seconds are the worst of it.

A caution, plainly

If you've got a hip replacement, a recent hip or knee injury, or anything that's been actively bothering you, don't push the deep squat. Talk to whoever's treating you before you load that joint up. This isn't a stretch you tough through if something sharp shows up. Dull pull, fine. Sharp pain, stop.

One thing I'll say again

I'm not chasing flexibility here for its own sake. I still can't touch my toes and I've made peace with that. The goal with the hips is the same as everywhere else in this class — function and calm, not becoming bendy. If your hips feel less locked up after work and you can bend down to pull a weed or pick up a kid without wincing, that's a win. Nobody's grading your squat form.

Gracie caught me doing something like this on the porch one morning, actually, not the breathing stuff this time, the hip circles, and she asked if I was dancing. I told her I was resetting my hips so I could keep gardening without complaining about it later. She thought that was funny enough to tell Katie. Kids notice everything you do on the porch, turns out, even the weird stuff.

Before next time

Try the two-minute warm-up tonight before bed, even without the full stretch sequence after. See if your hips feel any different in the morning. That's the whole experiment. 👍
