Why The Two Norths Disagree

Okay. Last lesson we did stuff wrong on purpose so it'd stick. Good. Now I have to tell you about the thing that got me, personally, on an actual hike, and it's the reason I check this one twice every single time like a nervous tic.

There are two norths. That's the whole problem in one sentence.

There's True North, which is the actual North Pole, the top of the planet, what your map is drawn against. And there's Magnetic North, which is where your compass needle actually points, because it's chasing the earth's magnetic field, and that field is off in northern Canada somewhere, not at the pole. It wanders around a little over the years too, which is Low Key annoying but not something you need to lose sleep over.

The gap between those two norths, from wherever you're standing, is called declination. In Utah County it's a few degrees. Not huge, but enough. Enough that if you ignore it, you will walk toward the wrong hill with total confidence.

The time I didn't check

First real bearing I ever took out in the field, I skipped this step. Didn't even think about it. Lined up my map, shot my bearing, walked with total confidence for a good while.

Ended up on the wrong side of a small hill that had no business being there. Had to stop, figure out what went sideways, and backtrack. It wasn't a disaster. It was daylight, I was fine, but I was about 40 degrees off from where I meant to be, and 40 degrees adds up fast over distance. That's not a "oops, close enough" miss. That's a "I am now somewhere else entirely" miss.

That's declination. Left unchecked, it quietly steers you off.

So now I check it every time, out loud, like a checklist item, not a memory I'm trusting myself to have. That's the opinion I'll die on here: don't try to remember declination, build a habit around it instead. Memory fails you exactly when you're tired, cold, or in a hurry, which is exactly when you need this the most.

How to actually deal with it

Here's the practical version, at home, no canyon required.

Step 1: Find your declination number. Every good topo map has this printed on it, usually down in a corner, as a little diagram with two arrows and a number of degrees between them. It'll say something like "12° E" or "12° W." That's your area's declination. Utah's is on the smaller side compared to some places, but "smaller" isn't "zero," so don't skip it.

Step 2: Know which way you're adjusting. If your declination is East, you subtract it from your compass reading to get true, or add it going the other direction. If it's West, it flips. I'm not going to make you memorize a rule right now that you'll forget under stress. Instead:

Step 3: Just set it on the compass and forget about the math. This is the actual fix, and it's why I tell beginners to buy the plain baseplate compass instead of the fancy sighting one. A basic baseplate compass, the cheap kind, usually has a little screw or dial on the housing that lets you dial in your declination once and lock it in. After that, you never do the math again. The compass does it for you, every single time you take a bearing.

That fancy mirror compass I bought once, thinking it'd make me better at this? Fussier. More parts, more steps, more ways to mess it up. I went back to the fifteen-dollar baseplate one and never looked back. For learning this stuff, and honestly for most of what you'll ever need, simpler wins.

Step 4: Check it anyway, every time, out loud. Even with it dialed in, I still glance at the setting before I shoot a bearing. Say it to myself. "Declination's set." It's a two-second habit. Cheap insurance against the exact mistake I made on that hillside.

A word on why this matters more than it seems like it should

A few degrees doesn't sound like much sitting at your kitchen table. But bearings aren't measured in feet, they're measured in angle, and angle error grows the farther you walk. Over a quarter mile, a small error puts you noticeably off. Over a mile, you could miss your target landmark entirely and not know why. This is exactly the kind of thing that turns a simple hike into a long afternoon of backtracking, which nobody wants, up a canyon, with the light going.

Set the declination once at home before you ever head out. Don't wait to sort it out on the trail.

Before next time

Find a topo map, even a printed one you've got around the house, and locate the declination diagram on it. If you've got a baseplate compass, see if it has an adjustable housing and try setting the number.
