Matching Ridges And Drainages To Paper
Okay. Last lesson we turned the map until it felt right. Now let's talk about how you actually confirm it feels right, because "it feels right" isn't a real method until you know what you're looking for.
Here's the thing your eye needs to learn: ridges and drainages are opposites on a map, and once you can tell them apart at a glance, orienting stops being a guess and starts being obvious.
Ridges point down. Drainages point up.
I know that sounds backwards. Let me explain.
On a topo map, the little V-shapes the contour lines make either point toward higher ground or away from it. A ridge is high ground sticking out. The contour lines make a V that points downhill, away from the peak, like the ridge is a finger pointing at the valley.
A drainage is the opposite. Water runs downhill and cuts a channel, so the contour lines make a V that points uphill, toward the high ground, like the mountain is drinking through a straw.
Ridge points down. Drainage points up. That's the whole trick. I probably said that fifty times to myself before it stoped feeling like a coin flip.
Do this at home first
Grab any topo map, even a random one you're not using for a trip. Pick a spot with some texture to it, not a flat valley floor.
- Find a peak or high point.
- Trace one of the ridgelines running off of it with your finger. Notice the Vs point away from the peak.
- Now find a drainage, a stream or a dry wash, running near that ridge.
- Trace it and notice the Vs point the other way, back up toward the high ground.
Do that for five minutes and something clicks. It's genuinely Low Key one of the more satisfying things in this whole class, watching a flat piece of paper suddenly have hills and gullies on it.
Now go outside and match it
This is the actual skill. Standing on a trail, look at the real ridge in front of you. Then look down at your map and find the ridge that matches its shape, the way it curves, where it's steep versus where it flattens out. Same with any drainage or gully you can see.
You're not reading numbers yet. You're matching shapes. The ridge on paper should look, in a rough way, like the ridge in front of your face. If it doesn't, you probably haven't oriented the map correctly, or you're looking at the wrong ridge entirely, which happens more than you'd think when there are three ridges that all look kind of the same from where you're standing.
This is also where the cheap compass earns its keep. You're not using it for a bearing here, you're using the baseplate edge as a straightedge to sight along, lining it up with the ridge and then checking that same line against the map. I tried a nicer sighting mirror compass a while back thinking it'd help with exactly this kind of thing. It didn't. More moving parts, more fussing, and for sighting a ridgeline the flat edge of a cheap baseplate does the same job with zero fuss. I went back to the cheap one and haven't touched the fancy one since.
The mistake beginners make
They try to match the whole map to the whole view at once. Don't. Pick one feature, the biggest, most obvious ridge or drainage near you, and match just that one first. Once that one clicks into place, the rest of the map tends to fall in around it. Trying to make everything line up simultaneously just gets you staring at a piece of paper feeling dumb, and I've been there.
A real caution here
If you're doing this on an actual hike and not in your living room, don't get so locked into the map that you stop watching your footing. Loose rock, roots, drop-offs, whatever. Stop walking, look at the map, look at the terrain, then start walking again. Don't do both at once. I still can't take a bearing smoothly while moving, and matching terrain is the same deal. Plant your feet, look, then move.

Find a topo map of somewhere you actually hike and spend five minutes just finding one ridge and one drainage on it before we meet again. Don't overthink it, just point at the Vs and say "that one's a ridge" out loud like a weirdo. It helps.
