Under-Promise: What to Expect Week to Week

What does this actually look like once you've been coming for a month? Worth answering now, because what people picture in week one and what actually happens are usually two different things.

Picture what most people show up with: they've joined a walking group, so surely there's a program. Week one is easy, week four is a little harder, by week eight you're covering more ground at a faster clip. Progress you can graph.

That's not what this is. I want to be straight about that now instead of letting you find out slowly and feel let down.

What actually happens week to week

Some mornings we walk the loop in under thirty minutes because everyone's moving well and the conversation is light. Some mornings it takes forty-five because somebody's knee is talking to them, or it's cold enough that we're all a little stiff, or somebody brought a real problem to chew on and we slow down without deciding to. Both are fine. Neither is the "real" version of the group.

I'm not tracking whether this week was better than last week. I've told you before I don't think in terms of steps or numbers, and this is the same idea from a different angle. There's no ladder we're climbing. There's just Tuesday, and then there's the next Tuesday.

Come expecting steady improvement and you'll be disappointed by about week three, when it feels the same as week one. Come expecting company and a reason to get out the door, and it delivers on that every single time.

The pace thing, again

I have to own this one, because I still get it wrong. Left alone, I walk like I've got somewhere to be. It's just how I'm built. I have to catch myself, and half the time somebody else catches it for me.

Melissa walked with the group exactly one time, a while back, and afterward told me flat out that I set the pace like I'm late for something. She was right. She never came back, and I don't blame her. That one stuck with me more than almost anything anybody's said to me about how I run this. I've worked on it since, but I want you to know going in that it's a real gap, not a solved problem. If I get ahead of you, say something. You won't be the first.

What to expect from yourself

Don't expect a straight line. Some weeks your body feels good and the loop is easy. Some weeks it's not, and that has nothing to do with whether you're doing this right. Weather changes it. Sleep changes it. Whatever's going on in your life that week changes it. A walking group doesn't override any of that, it just gives you a reason to show up inside of it.

If you're just starting out, a few things worth keeping in mind:

  • Don't buy anything special first. Shoes you already own and walk in comfortably are fine to start. See how your body does before you decide you need different gear.
  • Bring water in summer, dress in layers the rest of the year. Utah mornings swing more than people expect, especially up here where the air's dry enough that you don't always feel how much you're sweating until you're thirsty.
  • Expect the first two or three weeks to feel like nothing's happening. That's normal. The payoff isn't a fitness milestone, it's that by week four or five you've built a habit of getting out the door, which is the actual hard part.
  • If something hurts in a sharp, specific way, stop and tell someone, ideally me. Sore is normal. Sharp pain in a joint isn't something to walk through because you don't want to interrupt the group.

What I won't do

I won't promise you'll get faster. I won't promise you'll lose weight or hit some number. I won't check in with a chart at the end of the month showing your progress, because I don't keep one.

What I will do is show up at the same time, on the same loop, and expect you to do the same. That's the whole design. Low bar, but a bar you can actually clear every single week, which in my experience is worth more than a high bar you clear twice and then quietly stop trying for.

I'd rather you think this sounds almost too simple and show up anyway than think it sounds impressive and quit by February.

Before next time

Just show up once without deciding in advance whether it was a good walk or a bad one. See if you can let it just be a walk.
