Did anyone else's watch make them feel bad this week?
I don't track steps and I'd rather you didn't either, but I know some of you do. Curious if anyone noticed the number making a walk feel like a chore instead of just a walk. Not trying to talk you out of your watch. Just asking.
okay hot take incoming but the whole "your watch guilt tripping you" narrative is kind of a skill issue ๐ like if a notification saying you didnt close your rings is enough to ruin your week thats a you problem not an apple problem, sorry not sorry
ive had mine tracking macros steps sleep the whole thing for like 8 months now and the the second you stop treating the numbers as a moral referendum on your worth as a person and treat it as data its so much better. its just information. its not judging you it doesnt have opinions its an algorithm counting arm movements lol
also 1. if youre consistently "failing" the same metric every week for months thats not the watch being mean thats a pattern you can actually use, thats useful information not an attack. 2. turn off the notifications that stress you out, you dont have to have Thanks
okay but I think that only works if you're wired that way to begin with..! I had one of those watches for like a year and "it's just data" is not how my brain processed it at 11pm seeing I had 40 minutes left to close a ring lol... I know myself, I will absolutely turn a number into a referendum on my worth, thats just how I'm built, and pretending I can reframe it into neutral information when I've got a toddler and dinner on the stove and Kent asking what time we're eating is just not realistic for me
I ended up selling mine at a DI run. not because I have a skill issue, just because I know what helps me improve at something (like my sourdough, I track hydration and temp constantly and it feels totally different) versus what just makes me anxious for no reason. a machine telling me I "failed" sleep for the fourth
Ok this made me laugh because mine did the opposite this week, told me I "hit my goals" three days in a row when I know for a fact I skipped Tuesday entirely lol. So now I don't trust it either direction! Anybody know if these things recalibrate or is mine broken? Kinda don't want to keep walking based on bad data if that makes sense...
lol yes mine straight up sent me a "time to get moving" notification while I was standing doing squats. it does not know context, it sees stillness and panics ๐
- i've decided the watch has no concept of isometric holds and this is a design flaw, not a me problem
- it also low key guilt trips me if my sleep score dips which is rude because I cant control if my husband's timezone difference gives me a weird brain at 2am, thats not a fitness metric thats just life
- still cant decide if the weekly summary is motivating or just a passive aggressive little report card
anyway Shannon, west side of AF, still team "delete the app and live in ignorance" or did you cave and start wearing it again lol. last I heard you were threatening to thrwo yours in a drawer for a month :c
the "its an algorithm counting arm movements" thing is actually true though, i mean thats just how the accelerometer works, no big revelation there... its measuring wrist acceleration and inferring movement type off a model, thats it. it doesnt know you're toddler exists lol but yeah okay i'll give you the one point, the notification timing is a real design problem. getting told at 11pm you "failed" something is a bad ux choice, thats on apple not on your brain wiring. i turned mine off years ago for that exact reason, the end of day summary just guilt trips people who are already tired and not thinking clearly. thats a legit criticism where i still dont fully buy it is calling it a "you have to be wired a certain way" thing. everyone can choose what they let a number mean, thats not a personality trait thats just a habit, and
LOL yeah mine did the same thing last week.
So does anyone trust these things or is it just me. mine kept saying I was "sedentary" while I was out walking with the group lol. rude Danny, arguing with a wristband is a real skill lol, i think we all got that talent now
Hyrum ๐ mine did that too lol, said "sedentary" mid loop like ok thanks i needed that. i just track pace/incline separately anyway, the watch is straight up wrong on grade half the time not you fr :)
lol sara same, mine still insists the loop is flat.
Katelyn, your calves are the more reliable instrument here, trust me. Sara's right that the watch is bad at grade, not effort. That's exactly the thing I was asking about - the number lies and you two are still the ones feeling the incline.
