Why Going Down Is Harder on the Body

We've talked about turning around before you want to and what elevation costs you at 4,600 feet. This lesson is about the walk back down, which most people don't think about at all until it's hurting them.

Here's the thing nobody tells you before you start walking canyon trails. Uphill builds you. Downhill breaks you. I've said some version of this before and I'll say it again because it's the single most useful thing I know about this sport, if you want to call it a sport.

Going up, your body is doing work it's built for. Muscles contracting, shortening, pulling you forward and up. It's hard, your lungs know it's hard, but it's a kind of hard your body handles well. Going down is different. Your muscles are contracting while they lengthen, absorbing your weight over and over with every step, and that's a much rougher job. It's called eccentric loading if you want the term for it. I mostly just think of it as the bill coming due.

Where people actually get hurt

Most trail injuries I've seen or heard about happen on the way down. Rolled ankles. Jammed knees. The occasional bad fall from someone moving faster than their legs could actually manage. Going up, you're tired but careful, because it's obviously hard and you respect it. Going down feels easy by comparison, so people relax, pick up speed, and stop watching their feet the way they were ten minutes earlier. That's exactly backward. The descent deserves more attention, not less.

A younger man passed me once on an uphill stretch, moving fast, clearly feeling strong. Ten minutes later I found him sitting on a boulder, winded, done for a while. I didn't say anything to him. I didn't need to. I just filed it away as more proof that steady wins the grade, both directions. He'd spent everything going up. I don't know how he handled the way down, but I'd guess it wasn't graceful.

What's actually happening to your body

Your quads are doing the braking on a descent. Every step down, they're working to slow your fall, and that adds up over a mile or two in a way flat walking never does. That's why your legs feel it the next day after a downhill-heavy hike more than after a flat one of the same distance. That's not weakness. That's just what the job asks of the muscle.

Your knees take more impact too, especially if the trail is steep or the surface is loose. And your feet are working harder to find stable ground, because gravity's helping you along whether you're ready for it or not.

What to actually do about it

A few things, and none of them require gear or a gym membership.

Shorten your stride. Same idea as the short steps I've talked about for climbing, but it matters even more coming down. A long stride downhill means more impact per step and less control. Small steps, more of them.

Slow down on purpose. This is the one people resist because downhill feels like the reward part, the part where you finally get to move fast after all that climbing. Resist that. Let gravity do less of the work for you.

Watch loose rock specifically. Loose rock on a downhill is where people get hurt. Not exaggerating that. If you feel gravel shifting under your foot, slow down more, not less.

Bend your knees a little more than feels natural. Stiff-legged walking downhill sends the shock straight up into your joints. A soft knee absorbs some of it.

Use trekking poles if you've got knee trouble already. I don't use them myself, but I've seen them help people a lot on the descent specifically. Worth trying if your knees complain.

At home, before you're even on a trail

You can build some of this without a canyon nearby. Find any set of stairs, or even a sloped driveway, and practice walking down slowly with short, controlled steps, knees soft. It feels silly to practice something as basic as walking down stairs. Do it anyway. The habit you build at home is the one you'll default to on the trail when you're tired and not thinking clearly, which is exactly when you need it.

Before next time

Next time you're out, pay attention to your pace on the way down compared to the way up. Most people speed up without noticing. See if you can catch yourself doing it, and slow back down before anything goes wrong.
