Loose Rock and Where Ankles Go Wrong

We've talked about why going down is harder on the body. This lesson is about the specific thing that gets people on the way down. Not the grade. Not their legs. Their feet, landing wrong on something that moves.

Loose rock on a downhill is where people get hurt. I want to say that plainly before anything else, because it's the whole lesson in one sentence and everything else is just how to handle it.

Why downhill rock is different

Going up, loose rock mostly just slows you down. You push off it, it slides a little, you adjust and keep climbing. Annoying, not dangerous.

Going down, your weight is already moving forward and down, and when your foot lands on a rock that shifts under you, there's no time to correct. Your ankle rolls before your brain has registered anything happened. That's how it went for me, years back, coming down too fast on a stretch that looked fine and wasn't. I sat on the ground for ten minutes before I trusted the ankle to hold me. Nothing broke. I was lucky, and I knew it at the time.

What actually causes the roll

It's almost never one big rock. It's usually small loose gravel sitting on top of packed dirt, the kind that looks solid until your foot's already committed. Switchbacks are bad for this because the trail surface has been walked and eroded from a hundred different angles. Anywhere water has run across the trail after rain is bad too, because it washes the fine dirt out and leaves the loose stuff sitting there waiting.

What to do about it, at home first

Before you're ever on the trail, you can build some of your defense in your own living room.

Ankle strength. Stand on one foot for thirty seconds, no shoe, next to a counter you can grab if you need it. Do it on both sides, most days. That's it. I'm not going to give you a full program because that's not my area, but this one is simple enough that I'll vouch for it. A stronger ankle recovers from a small roll instead of turning it into a big one.

Shoes with actual tread. Check the bottom of your shoes. If the tread's worn smooth in the middle, that shoe has less grip than you think it does, and downhill is exactly where you'll find out.

What to do on the trail

Shorten your stride going down. This feels overly cautious the first few times and it isn't. A shorter stride means less speed, less commitment to each footfall, and more chance to bail out of a bad step before your full weight lands on it.

Look two steps ahead, not at your feet. Sounds backward, but if you're only looking at the ground right under you, you're reacting to loose rock instead of planning around it.

Slow down before the switchback, not during it. That's where the trail surface is worst and where people speed up out of habit because it feels like the "easy" part, the corner, not the straightaway.

If you feel gravel shift under a foot, don't fight it by locking your leg. Let the foot settle, adjust your weight, then keep going. Fighting a shifting rock is how a small slide becomes a twisted ankle.

The stones at the switchback

There's a small pile of stones stacked up at one switchback partway up the canyon trail I walk most. I don't know who started it. Somebody just began stacking rocks there years ago, and now everybody who passes adds one. I've added a stone every single time I've walked past that spot since I first noticed it.

I like that I don't know who started it. It means the trail belongs to everybody who uses it, a little bit, and the pile keeps growing without anyone taking credit. I mention it here because that exact switchback is also one of the loosest, worst-footing spots on the whole route, and I've come to think of the stone pile as a marker. Slow down here. Somebody built something in this spot. Pay attention to your feet.

The opinion, again

Uphill builds you. Downhill breaks you. I've said it before and I'll keep saying it, because people train hard for the climb and then treat the way down like a reward lap. It isn't. It's the part of the walk that actually hurts people, and loose rock is usually the reason.

Before next time

Try the one-foot balance test tonight, both sides, and notice honestly which ankle feels weaker. That's the one to pay closer attention to on your next downhill.
