Where Pocket Holes Belong on the Table and Where They Don't

ok. jig's set up, holes are drilled clean, screws are going in without splitting anything. good. now let's talk about where you actually use this joint, because that's the part people get wrong more than the drilling itself.
i've heard the snobbery about pocket holes. somebody at a lumber yard or on a forum somewhere decided they're cheating, that a "real" joint is a mortise and tenon or a hand-cut dovetail. i don't buy it. pocket holes are a real joint. they're strong, they're fast, and they let a working person build a table on a saturday instead of giving up three weekends to it. use the right joint for the job and don't apologize for it.
but "the right joint for the job" cuts both ways. pocket holes are great in some spots and the wrong call in others, and knowing the difference is what separates furniture that lasts from furniture that's held together by hope.
where pocket holes are the right call
apron to leg joints, which is exactly what we're doing on this table. the apron sits under the tabletop, it's not visible from the top or usually from the side if you angle it right, and it takes the pocket screws well because you're pulling two pieces together at a solid glued face, not just relying on the screw.
face frames on cabinets. if you ever build a bookshelf or a cabinet down the road, pocket holes are how most people join the frame pieces. fast, strong, hidden on the back side.
anywhere the joint is under load in one direction and hidden. pocket holes are good at pulling things together tight. they're not as good at resisting racking or twisting all on their own, which is why we still glue the joint. the screw holds it while the glue cures, and the glue is doing a lot of the long-term work. screws and glue alone is fine for a while, but if you skip the glue and lean on the screws by themselves, that joint racks eventually and the whole piece gets wobbly. pocket screws with glue is a real joint. pocket screws alone is a table you'll be re-tightening in two years.
where they don't belong
anywhere you'll actually see the hole. obvious, but people forget it under a table, they don't think about it on a shelf. if the piece is visible from a normal viewing angle, don't pocket-hole it there. flip your plan around, put the joint somewhere it hides.
end grain to end grain, like if you're trying to join two boards end to end to make a longer board. pocket screws don't have much to bite into there and it's a weak joint no matter how many screws you cram in. that's a different joinery problem entirely, not one pocket holes solve.
anything that's going to take a lot of racking stress on its own, like a drawer box. drawers get pulled and pushed and slammed by kids a hundred times a day, and pocket holes by themselves don't hold up well to that kind of repeated stress over years. that's actually dowels or a proper rabbet joint territory.
which reminds me. my neighbor shellie asked me a while back to fix a drawer that kept falling apart on her. i pulled it out expecting to just tighten something, and it turned out the whole thing was held together with these little stapled corners, whatever the manufacturer used to save four cents a drawer. i ended up just rebuilding the box from scratch with dowels instead. she tried to pay me for it and i just kind of changed the subject and got out of there before she could push it too hard. anyway. point is, that drawer failure wasn't really a pocket-hole problem, it was a "wrong joint for a part of the furniture that takes constant abuse" problem. good joinery isn't one joint doing everything. it's picking the joint that matches what the piece of furniture is going to go through.
a quick gut check before you drill
before you set the jig on any joint, ask yourself two things. can somebody see this face when the piece is finished and sitting where it'll live? and is this joint going to get pulled, twisted, or slammed on a regular basis? if the answer to the first is yes, find another spot or another joint. if the answer to the second is yes, pocket holes plus glue can still work, but don't skip the glue and don't skimp on how many screws you're putting in.
on our table, the apron-to-leg joints check out fine on both counts. hidden under the top, and the load is mostly straight down, which pocket screws and glue handle well.
a caution while we're at it: don't overload a single pocket screw thinking more screws always means more strength. two screws per joint, properly seated with glue, beats four screws crammed in too close together where you've weakened the wood around them. more isn't always stronger. spacing and glue matter more than screw count.
Before next time, look at the plan again and find every joint on the table where a screw hole could peek out on the finished piece. mark those, so we know exactly where we need to think differently when we get to assembly.
