Dry-Fit the Whole Table First

ok. legs, aprons, all your dowel joints are drilled and you've probably already dry-fit a joint here and there along the way. good. now we're doing it for real, all at once, the whole table, no glue.

i know it feels like a step you could skip. you've dry-fit the joints already, right, so what's one more time. but dry-fitting one joint at a time is not the same as dry-fitting the whole thing standing up on its own legs. things that look fine in pieces sometimes don't look fine together. you want to find that out now, with zero glue involved, not in the ten minutes you have before it sets up.

why i'm making you do this

my first bench, the one i built for amy's entryway, wobbled. still does. it's out in the garage right now doing nothing but reminding me of something.

the reason it wobbles isn't the joinery. the joinery's fine. it wobbles because i never actually stood the thing up and checked it square before i glued it. i eyeballed the cuts, eyeballed the assembly, and went straight for the clamps because i was excited to see it finished. by the time i noticed one leg was a hair long and the whole thing rocked on a flat floor, the glue was already curing. couldn't do a thing about it.

that bench taught me eyeballing is how you waste an afternoon. dry-fitting the whole table before glue is the cheap insurance against that. it costs you fifteen minutes. fixing a glued-up rack costs you the whole piece.

how to actually do it

1. assemble the whole table, no glue, no clamps yet. legs, aprons, all four corners, dowels in dry. push everything together by hand as far as it'll go. if a joint won't seat, don't force it — figure out why now.

2. stand it up on a flat floor. your garage floor is probably not perfectly flat, so if you've got a flat spot — a section of the slab, a workbench top — use that. rock it gently. if it rocks, something's off before you ever touch a clamp.

3. check square at every corner. framing square if you've got one, or measure diagonals corner to corner. two diagonals that match means your table's square. if they're off by more than an eighth inch, something's shifted and you want to find which joint before glue's involved.

4. check the top sits flat. if you've got your tabletop cut, lay it on the assembled base, not attached, just resting. see if it rocks or if there's a gap anywhere. easier to plane a high spot on a leg now than after everything's glued rigid.

5. mark your orientation. pencil a light mark on each joint — which apron goes to which leg, which face is up. sounds obvious until you're mid-glue-up trying to remember which end was which. take the thirty seconds now.

6. take it apart in the same order you'll put it back together. pull it apart carefully, dowels and all, and set the pieces down in the order you'll be grabbing them during the real glue-up. this matters more than people think. glue sets fast and you don't want to be hunting for the right apron while it's tacking up in your hand.

what you're actually looking for

  • any joint that doesn't seat fully by hand
  • diagonals that don't match
  • a leg that's proud or short
  • a top that rocks on the base

if you find any of that, this is the moment to fix it. sand a high spot, recut a leg, whatever it takes. i mismeasured a set of table legs once — two came out at 17 inches, two at 17 and a quarter — and instead of just recutting the short ones, i tried to sand the long ones down to match. you cannot sand out a quarter inch. lost an hour proving that to myself before i gave up and recut them properly. would've taken ten minutes if i'd just admitted the mistake up front.

measure everything, trust nothing, including the cut you made an hour ago. the board doesn't care what you think you cut it to.

one real caution here

when you're standing the frame up dry to check it, don't lean on it hard or put weight on a corner to "test" it. with no glue in yet, a dry-fit dowel joint can pop loose under sideways pressure and the whole thing can drop. you're checking square and fit, not stress-testing it. save that for after glue.
