Hi everyone, Gilbert here. Glad you signed up. Week one we're keeping it simple: how to hold the rod, a basic cast in the parking lot before we ever touch water, and pinching down barbs on our hooks (ask me sometime about why that matters to me personally). Hey, Im Russell, I live on the Greenwood side of AF... never fly fished before in my life lol, just looking for a new hobby that'll get me up the canyon more. excited for May 9!
I already own a fly rod thats been sitting in the garage for two years because i bought the "starter kit" off some guy who swore it was all i needed, and its missing like half the stuff you need according to the supply list they emailed us. cool cool. glad i pre spent money on that
So I've been up American Fork Canyon a bunch this spring with my camera watching guys fish and now I'm signing up like maybe I should try it instead of just photographing other people doing it lol. do we need to buy our own rod/reel before day one or does the class provide loaners for the first session?? kind of dont want to drop $150 on gear if I'm gonna hate it

Signing up for this because my neighbor's husband won't stop talking about the Provo River like its a religious experience and I figured it's time to see what the fuss is. also fell down a YouTube hole last week watching some guy in Idaho tie flies at his kitchen table for like 40 minutes and somehow it was riveting, my husband thought I'd lost it. miranda kept looking over my shoulder going "that's it? that's the whole video?" but I was locked in. Ordered a cheap starter rod off Amazon last night before I could talk myself out of it, we'll see if that was a mistake or not lol. mostly hoping to get comfortable enough with the basics that I can take Sophie out this summer, she's 10 and would 100% rather be doing anything active outside then sit
So my brother in law Curtis keeps sending me youtube videos of guys fly fishing the Provo like its his job, and now im half convinced I need a $300 rod before ive even taken the class lol... anyone else fall down that hole yet the algorithm feeds me more after the first one... watched some guy nymphing for like 20 min straight, very soothing, learned nothing practical but felt like I did. gonna hold off buying gear til we know what were doing May 9, but if anyone already has extra waders or whatever collecting dust let me know 😎 Excited for this one, been wanting an excuse to get up the canyon that isnt just hiking with the kids
April Doyle, American Fork, Meadowbrook ward if that means anything to anyone else on here. signing up because Jason's cousin will not stop talking about fly fishing every single family gathering and I got tired of nodding along with no idea what he was describing. figured I'd learn it properly instead of faking my way through another Thanksgiving conversation. Watched a couple beginner casting videos on Youtube last week to get a head start and I feel like I made it worse for myself, because now I have opinions about rod weight and I don't even own a rod yet. my neighbor (the one who's reliable, not the one who no-shows to everything I plan, different story) fishes the Provo a lot and told me not to buy gear until after the first class or two I don't waste money on the wrong setup. seemed like decent advice I'm holding off, even though Amazon's algorithm has apparently decided I need a $200 wa
April same, except mine wasn't Thanksgiving it was Marcus in my driveway... six weeks later I still can't cast worth anything but at least I understand the words now lol
Dylan, six weeks in and you understand the words, that's real progress, not nothing. Casting was the last thing to click for me too, took way longer than I wanted to admit. Sorry we're wrapped up for this session, it went fast. Missing our Saturday mornings already. Hoping there's a fall class so we can keep working that cast.

Russell, "swatting a fly" made me laugh out loud, and honestly that's exactly what mine looked like for longer than I want to admit... Miss those Saturday mornings too, there was something nice about being up the canyon before the rest of the world got moving! I've got the same itch you do, want a fall session so we can all keep chipping away at that cast. Thanks for a good six weeks, Russell.

Russell, that's the whole appeal right there, a quiet Saturday morning to think back on when the week's been slammed! I've been doing the same, actually, tying flies at the kitchen table and missing the canyon air. Dylan, you're fighting the same bee Shane's swatting, seems like good company! No promises yet, but the fall itch is real on my end too. Good six weeks indeed.

Russell, ha, "peaceful" is generous, ask Tricia about the thread mess on the the kitchen chair. Still beats the fence-whipping days. Genuinely going to miss these Saturday mornings and this group. Keep an eye out for a fall session, and enjoy the quiet while it lasts. Thanks for six good ones.
