Jumping a car in the right order (the negative goes to ground)

Okay. Last time we talked about cleaning a corroded terminal with a wire brush. This lesson's the one I probably should've taught first, honestly, because it's the one that's actually cost me something.

My first real fix, ever, was a dead Corolla in a cold apartment parking lot. I had jumper cables and no idea what I was doing. I clamped the negative cable straight onto the negative terminal of the dead battery, same as the positive, because that seemed logical at the time. Got a little spark, dropped the cable, said a word loud enough that a neighbor opened his window to see what was going on. Car started fine anyway. But I got lucky, not smart. The order matters, and I want you to actually know why instead of just memorizing a rule.

Why the order matters

A battery has two terminals, positive and negative. When you're jumping a dead car off a good one, you're making a connection between two batteries, and if you do it in the wrong sequence you can get a spark right near the battery, which is not somewhere you want a spark. Batteries vent a little hydrogen gas, especially older ones or ones that have been struggling. Not super common for it to be a problem, but it's the reason there's a right order at all.

The trick to the safe order: the very last connection you make should be on the dead car, away from the battery, on bare metal. Not on the battery itself.

The steps

Get both cars off, keys out, parking brakes on. Pull them nose to nose or close enough that your cables reach. Pop both hoods.

  1. Red cable, positive terminal, dead battery. Clamp it on. Positive terminal's usually marked with a plus sign and often has a red cap or cover.
  2. Red cable, positive terminal, good battery. Same clamp, other end, good car.
  3. Black cable, negative terminal, good battery. This one's straightforward, negative to negative, on the working car.
  4. Black cable, bare unpainted metal on the dead car, away from the battery. Not the negative terminal. A bolt on the engine block, a strut mount, something metal and clean. This is your ground.

That fourth step is the one everybody skips because it feels like it should just mirror step 3. It doesn't. Grounding it away from the battery means if there's any spark at that last connection, and there's always a small chance, it happens away from the battery and away from any hydrogen it might be venting. That's the whole reason for the order. It's not superstition, it's just keeping the spark somewhere boring.

Start the good car, let it run a couple minutes. Then try the dead car. If it turns over, let it run. Take the cables off in the reverse order you put them on. Ground clamp off first, then negative off the good battery, then the two positive clamps.

If it cranks but won't catch, or clicks and does nothing, that's a different conversation, might not be the battery at all. But for a straightforward dead battery, that's the whole job.

The gas cap thing, applied here

I want to say something that applies to jumping a car but honestly applies to a lot of car stuff: most breakdowns are boredom, not bad luck. A dead battery in December almost always had a warning sign. Slow crank for a week. Interior lights a little dim. People ignore it because the car started yesterday, so surely it'll start today. Then it's 15 degrees at 6am and it won't. Jumping it gets you moving, but it's the same battery underneath, and it'll do this again unless something changes.

Which is a good place to bring up something I do bring up unprompted, because it saved me a real headache. I found a slow coolant leak on my own truck a while back not from a gauge, but from a sweet smell in the cab and a little crusty residue on a hose clamp under the hood. Same instinct applies here. Your car gives you small signals before the big failure. A slow crank is the electrical version of that sweet smell. You just have to notice it instead of driving off and hoping.

A couple of real cautions

Don't let the clamps touch each other while any part of this is hooked up. Red touching black is a short, and it's not gentle. Keep them separated, keep them off metal surfaces until you're using them.

If a battery looks swollen, cracked, or is leaking anything, don't jump it. That's a battery that's done, not one that needs a boost, and it's not a great candidate for adding voltage to.

And don't lean directly over the battery while you're making connections. Just good posture, not fear.

Before next time

Find your battery's negative terminal and pick out, in advance, a good bare metal grounding spot near it on your own car, so you're not hunting for one in the cold and the dark someday. Takes thirty seconds now, saves you a headache later.
