Signing up for 3D Printing 101 - already own a printer lol

Nathan M.Apr 12, 3:58 AM

Figured I'd take the class even though I already have a printer, wanna actually finish something for once ๐Ÿ˜‚ anyone know if May 7 is in person or online? Thanks, Nathan

Isaiah AndersonApr 13, 7:48 PM

Nathan same, mine's been collecting dust since last year lol.

Braxton WhaleyApr 16, 10:01 PM

Isaiah thats exactly the trap lol.

May 7 is our in-person build day at the WeWork at Innovation Pointe in Lehi. Bring your printer's quirks and we'll troubleshoot live.

Braxton's onto something, deadlines fix the "started three things, finished none" problem. My first print sat half-failed on a shelf for weeks before I logged what went wrong and finished it.

Nathan M.May 12, 9:06 PM

oh perfect, in person is way better for this stuff anyway. The wework, got it ๐Ÿ‘ I'll bring my printer's quirks along, ha, mine's got plenty of those. It's kinda a Highland-table-saw situation over here, more toys than actual finished stuff lol! Excited to walk out with something done for once. Thanks, Nathan

Nathan the "more toys than finished STUFF" thing describes my entire garage lol... but yeah bring the quirks for sure. i think half the value of doing this in person is watching someone elses printer mess up right in front of you and going oh thank god its not just me lol. mine used to randomly skip layers and it turned out to just be a loose belt the whole time, took me forever to figure that out. probably something dumb and simple like that with yours too ๐Ÿค™

Kimball JohnsonMay 16, 5:28 AM

ugh me too

yeah man belts are sneayk like that, always the last thing you check when it's the the the first thing you shoulda checked lol... the quirks thing is real to, every one of these has its own personality once you dig in, you start noticing patterns after a while like oh this generation always does this weird thing. anyway yeah bring on the quirks Ntahan lol should be fun :)

Kyle's right, it's usually something dumb. Mine wasn't even a belt, my first print looked like a melted candleship because the bed wasn't level. Still keep it on my shelf. Nathan, bring the printer Thursday and we'll find your loose belt live.

Boyd LemmonMay 21, 11:34 PM

Oh my heck, "melted candleship" ๐Ÿ˜‚ Jacob that's about where I was at week 2 with my bed leveling, lol. Bring popcorn Thursday, sure ~boyd

Braxton WhaleyMay 22, 7:12 PM

Boyd lol "bring popcorn" comment got me ๐Ÿ˜‚ for real. also that humidity thing finally clicked, my filament was just damp this whole time lol

Jacob BurtInstructorMay 23, 6:10 PM

Popcorn's fair. Braxton, glad the humidity thing clicked, that one trips up more people than loose belts do. Nathan, Thursday, bring the printer, we'll diagnose it live.

sgining up for 3d printing 101 even tho i already got a printer sitting here lol, but slicing week is what saved my hydration mount print... cura settings were the move for real โœจ the melted candleship is permanently lodged in my brain now ๐Ÿ˜ญ anyone else get burned a bunch before finally figuring out settings that work for them, feel like i wasted like half a spool before it clicked :c

Brian OlsenJun 3, 6:13 PM

edit: spelling week 5 already?

Andrew G.Jun 6, 7:15 PM

phone keeps cutting out so sorry if this is choppy Brian, right? that bed level knob had me so confused week 1, kept turning it the wrong way lol

Jacob BurtInstructorJun 6, 11:39 PM

I know, it does that every session. Feels like we just leveled beds last week and now we're into first prints. Good news is week 5 is where it clicks for most people, you've already got the boring failures out of your system. Bring whatever you're working on Thursday, we'll check bed adhesion and slicer settings live. Nathan's bringing his printer too, so it'll be a real diagnostic night, not just slides.

JustinJun 12, 2:19 PM

lol yeah andrew nailed it, the bed level knob thing is exactly the vibe week 1 had us fr

so week 6 troubleshooting timing is perfect for me, my filament storage box lid is still like 2mm too tight lol. gotta add clearance and reprint before it drives me nuts again... it's been sitting there mocking me ngl. rice trick saved that spool though so still feels like a small win for me โœจ

โ™ก 103
Jacob BurtInstructorJun 14, 4:45 AM

2mm tight on a lid is almost always the printer's own tolerance stacking up, not your design. Add 0.3-0.4mm clearance per side and reprint the lid before Thursday if you can. Bring both versions, good side by side for the group to see.

JustinAug 25, 3:52 AM

man i wish i had that reprint to bring now lol, class ending kinda snuck up on me. still gonna add that clearance though, box lid deserves justice eventually ๐Ÿ˜‚ bless this whole session honestly

Jacob BurtInstructorAug 27, 11:02 PM

Justin, that lid absolutely deserves justice, don't let it win... add the 0.3-0.4mm and reprint whenever you get to it, no rush now. honestly six weeks always ends faster than I expect to, feels like we just leveled beds. nice having you in there. fingers crossed for a fall session so we can see that lid finally close right :(๐Ÿ™‚
