Debbie didn't grow up gardening. She got into it the way she gets into everything, by being annoyed at a problem she could see with her own eyes, in her case a bare dirt yard and the price of half-dead grocery produce. She keeps a garden journal three seasons deep, full of soil notes and rough pencil drawings she can't always identify. She built a cold frame out of an old storm window and scrap lumber, and it's ugly and it works. She teaches from her own failures first because they stick better than her wins, and she'll tell you plainly when she doesn't know something and where to go find out.
