The Flat Spiral, Slow and Even

Okay. New shape today, and I'm excited about this one, which I don't say often, but a flat spiral is genuinely one of my favorites to make and it's not hard, it's just slow. That's the whole lesson, honestly. Slow.

A flat spiral is exactly what it sounds like. You take a length of wire and coil it around itself, flat, like a tiny cinnamon roll, starting from a center point and working outward (or sometimes inward, depending who you ask and what you're making). You've probably seen these on earrings or as a little accent piece soldered or wired onto something bigger. We're doing them as standalone pieces for now, something you could hang off a pendant or use as a connector, because I want you to get comfortable with the shape before you're trying to combine it with anything else.

Here's the thing nobody tells you before you start: the temptation is to rush the first few loops because they feel small and insignificant, and that's exactly where it goes wrong. The center of your spiral sets the tone for the whole thing. If your first loop is loose or crooked, every loop after it inherits that problem and it gets worse as you go, not better. So we go slow at the start, slower than feels necessary, and it pays off later.

What you'll need

Same copper wire we've been using, 20 or 22 gauge is fine for this, and your round-nose pliers. You'll also want your flat-nose or chain-nose pliers for gripping and adjusting, and your hands, obviously, doing most of the actual work.

The steps, in hand order

1. Make a small starting loop. Take the very end of your wire and, using the tip of your round-nose pliers, curl it into a tiny loop, smaller than you think you need. This is your center. Don't worry about closing it perfectly flat yet, just get the curl started.

2. Grip the loop with your flat-nose pliers. This is the part people skip and shouldn't. You need something to hold onto the center while you keep coiling, or the whole thing spins loose in your fingers and you lose your shape. Grip it firmly but don't crush it.

3. Feed the wire around, a little at a time. With your other hand, guide the wire around the outside of that center loop, keeping it flat against the loop before it. Don't pull hard. You're guiding, not forcing.

4. Reposition your grip as you go. Every quarter turn or so, open your pliers, shift your grip closer to where the new coil is forming, and close back down. This is the part that feels fussy and repetitive and it is, and that's fine. That repetition is what keeps the spiral flat instead of cone-shaped, which is the single most common thing that goes wrong here.

5. Check flatness against the table. Every couple of loops, set the spiral down on your work surface and look at it from the side. If one edge is lifting up, you've got a cone starting, not a flat spiral. Catch it early. Trying to fix it after four more loops is much harder than fixing it now.

6. Keep going until you like the size, then trim and tuck. When your spiral is the size you want, snip the wire with a little tail left, and tuck that tail flat against the last loop so it doesn't poke out and catch on something later. A poky wire end against skin is not dangerous exactly, but it's annoying and it can scratch, so take the extra ten seconds.

I want to say something about pace here, because this is where the technical writer in me comes out. I write steps in the order your hands actually do them, not the order that seems logical on paper, and this is a good example of why that matters. If I told you "reposition your grip periodically" as step one, you'd have no idea what that meant yet. You need to feel the spiral wanting to cone under your fingers before "reposition your grip" means anything real. So don't read this whole list and try to memorize it. Do step one, then look up, then do two.

I think about that little copper-wrapped stone from my grandmother's things a lot when I'm doing this particular shape, actually. Whoever wrapped it used a small flat spiral like this one as an accent, tucked in next to where the stone sits, and I remember the first time I noticed it under a magnifying glass I actually said "oh" out loud, alone, in my kitchen. Nothing about it is perfect. The coils get slightly wider apart toward the outside, like whoever made it sped up near the end, got impatient, wanted to be done. I do the exact same thing. I recognize that impatience in my own hands now, which is a strange thing to have in common with someone I never met.

That's part of why I don't love the idea that a finished piece needs to be flawless. I'd genuinely rather you finish a spiral with a slightly uneven ending than abandon a clean-looking one halfway through, because the last part is where you learn the most, even when it's going badly and you want to stop. Finish it. The learning is in that last stretch.

Before next time

Practice two or three flat spirals with scrap copper, and don't throw away the lopsided ones. Bring your favorite attempt next time, even if you think it's ugly, especially if you think it's ugly.
