What MIG welding is, in plain terms

Alright. Let's actually talk about what this machine does, because I feel like nobody explained this part to me clearly when I started, and I want to save you the four hundred YouTube videos I watched trying to piece it together.

MIG stands for Metal Inert Gas. I'm not going to pretend that name means much even now that I know it. Here's what actually matters: you've got a gun, and out of that gun comes a thin wire, and that wire is fed through automatically while you pull the trigger. At the same time, gas flows out around the wire to shield everything from the air. That's the "inert gas" part. The whole point of the gas is to keep oxygen away from your weld while it's molten, because oxygen in there makes it weak and ugly.

So when you pull the trigger, three things happen at once. Wire feeds out. Gas flows. And electricity arcs between that wire and your metal, hot enough to melt both the wire and the edge of your workpiece so they become one puddle, and then that puddle cools into a bead. That's it. That's the whole idea. You're not gluing two pieces together, you're melting them together with a little extra metal added in from the wire.

Compare that to stick welding, which is what a lot of old-timers learned on, where you've got a single rod that burns down and you have to keep feeding it in by hand and swapping rods out. MIG feeds itself. That's why most people learn MIG first. It's more forgiving of your hands not knowing what they're doing yet, because the machine's handling the wire feed for you and you can focus on just... moving the gun steady and watching the puddle.

The parts you're actually controlling

There's really only three things you're managing as a beginner:

  • Your travel speed — how fast you move the gun across the metal
  • Your angle and distance — how you're holding the gun relative to the joint
  • Your settings on the machine — wire feed speed and voltage, which need to match the thickness of your metal

That third one is where I think most beginners get tripped up, and it's the thing I want you to actually believe: setup matters more than your hand skill does, especially early on. I feel like everybody assumes welding is about having steady, practiced hands, like a tattoo artist or something, and hand skill does matter eventually. But if your ground clamp has bad contact, or your gas isn't flowing, or your settings are way off for the metal you're using, no amount of steady hands is going to save that weld. Good setup does most of the work. Your job is mostly to not mess up something that's already working right.

What it actually looks like when you do it

You pull the trigger, wire touches metal, arc strikes. It's bright. It's loud, kind of a steady crackling sizzle, some people describe it as bacon frying and honestly that's not far off. You are not swinging the gun around, you're moving it slow and steady in one direction, keeping a consistent distance, watching the puddle form right behind the wire. New people almost always move too fast because the arc is a little scary and startling at first, and the instinct is to get it over with. Slow down. A boring, steady pace beats a nervous quick one every single time. I say that to basically everybody who walks in here.

When it goes right, you get a bead that looks like a stack of dimes, evenly overlapped little ripples. When it goes wrong, you get... well.

I still have my first bead. I kept it. It's sitting on my workbench right now and I bring it in sometimes to show people, because it looked like a caterpillar that had been stepped on. Just a lumpy, uneven, blobby mess, wandering all over the metal like I couldn't decide where I was going. I was genuinely embarrassed by it at the time. But I want you to know that guy who made that bead is the same guy who's teaching you tonight, and I can run a decent-looking weld now. If my first attempt looked like roadkill and I got past it, you will too. That's really the whole promise of this class.

A word on the gear before we go further

You don't need expensive equipment to learn this. My first welder was a cheap used one I bought off a guy, and I'm honestly a little annoyed by people online who act like you need a two-thousand-dollar machine to run a decent bead. You don't. What you do need is a proper auto-darkening helmet, not the flip-up kind. I know the flip helmets are cheaper and plenty of experienced guys swear by them, but for someone just starting out, I think they cause more bad habits than they prevent, because you can't see where you're actually starting your arc. You need to see that. We'll get you set up with the right helmet before you ever pull a trigger.

Also, real quick, because it matters: ventilation is not optional here. The fumes off molten metal are genuinely not something to be casual about. I learned that lesson more from my wife than from any safety video, and I take it seriously now. Wherever you're welding, at home or here in the shop, make sure air is actually moving through the space.
