Striking the arc without flinching
Alright. So we've done the ground clamp, we've done wire, we've done matching your settings, we've done gas, we've done how to hold the gun and stand at the table. That's a lot of setup. I know. I feel like I've said "before we actually weld anything" about six times now, and I promise, this is the lesson where we actually weld something.
So let's talk about the arc itself, because this is the part that gets in people's heads more than anything else.
The flinch is normal
When that arc strikes, it's bright, it's loud, there's a little pop and a hiss, and your brain says nope, pull back. Everybody does it the first time. I did it. I flinched so hard the first few tries that my bead looked like a caterpillar that got stepped on — I've still got that piece of scrap on my workbench at home, I show it to people sometimes just so they know where I started. If mine can go from that to something halfway decent, yours can too.
The flinch isn't a character flaw. It's just your body reacting to something loud and bright it's never dealt with before. The fix isn't willpower, it's repetition. You flinch less the fifth time than the first time, and by the twentieth time you don't flinch at all. So the goal today isn't a perfect bead. The goal is just getting your body used to the fact that the arc starting isn't an emergency.
Before you strike
A few things to check, and yeah, I know you're tired of me saying "check before you start," but this is the whole point of the last several lessons.
- Ground clamp — on bare metal, solid contact. I've told this story before but I'll say it again because it's the one thing that'll make you crazy if you skip it: I once spent ten minutes convinced my machine was broken, checked the gas, checked the wire, checked every setting twice, and it was the ground clamp sitting on the floor the whole time. Check it first. Every time.
- Settings — matched to your metal thickness, like we talked about.
- Gas flowing — you should hear it hiss when you pull the trigger.
- Helmet down — obviously, but people forget in the moment. Auto-darkening helmet, which is what I tell everybody to buy anyway, means you can actually see where you're starting before it goes dark. That's the whole reason I'm contrarian about the flip helmets. You need to see your starting point.
Striking the arc
Here's the actual steps.
- Rest the tip of the gun near where you want to start, just barely touching or a hair off the metal.
- Lower your helmet.
- Pull the trigger and hold your hand steady. The wire will touch the metal and the arc will strike right there.
- Don't pull away. This is the hard part. Everything in you wants to yank back the second it pops. Don't. Let it run.
- Move slow, steady, boring. I say this every lesson because it's the single biggest fix for nervous welding. New folks move too fast because the arc scares them and they want it over with. A slow, boring pace beats a fast nervous one every single time. Every time.
You're not trying to make anything today. You're just trying to lay a line on a piece of scrap and not flinch off of it halfway through. That's it. That's the whole lesson.
Do this at home
Get a stack of scrap steel — offcuts, an old bracket, whatever, doesn't need to be pretty — and just strike arcs and run short lines. Two inches, stop. Two inches, stop. Don't try to build anything yet. I feel like everybody wants to skip straight to the project and that's exactly how people get discouraged, because their first real project comes out rough and they think welding just isn't for them. It's not that. It's that they skipped the boring practice part. Do the boring part.
Do it somewhere with decent airflow. I've said this before too — Jan made me move my whole setup out of the garage into a corner with a fan and better ventilation after I came home smelling like burnt metal three days straight, and she was right, and I'm still a little annoyed about how right she was. Fumes aren't something to be casual about. Set up somewhere it can actually clear out.
One thing that helped me more than I expected, and I'll admit I built this mostly because I wanted an excuse to use my 3D printer again — I built a little welding cart out of scrap steel and some casters, and I was honestly not expecting it to roll straight, but it does. Having everything at a fixed height and rolling smooth instead of hunched over a bucket made my stance better without me even trying. You don't need a cart. But if your setup makes you hunch or twist to reach things, that's fighting you before you even strike the arc. Worth fixing if you can.
Before next time
Run at least twenty short arc strikes on scrap before our next session — not for a good bead, just to get your hand used to not flinching. If you've got a helmet and scrap at home, that's homework you can actually do tonight.
