Running a straight bead on flat scrap

Alright. So we've done the ground clamp, we've done wire, we've done matching your settings, we've done gas, we've done how to stand, we've done striking the arc, we've done slowing down... and now we're actually going to run one. A real bead, start to finish, on a flat piece of scrap. This is the lesson where it all comes together, or doesn't yet, and either way that's fine.

I want to be clear about what we're doing here. We are not building anything today. We're just laying down one straight line of weld on a flat piece of steel and seeing what it looks like. That's it. That's the whole job. I feel like everybody wants to skip this part and go build the thing they came here to build, and that's exactly how people get discouraged in week two. Slow down. Scrap first.

What you need in front of you

  • A flat piece of scrap steel, something like 1/8 inch thick is good for this. Not too thin, not too thick.
  • Your welder set up the way we've talked about the last few weeks. Ground clamp clean and clamped tight. Wire loaded, tension right. Gas flowing, somewhere around 20-25 CFH if you're running the standard shielding gas most beginners use.
  • Your auto-darkening helmet. I'll say it again, get the auto-darkening kind. I know the flip helmets are cheaper and some of the old guys swear by them, but you need to see exactly where you're starting your arc, and flipping it down a half second late is how you end up not knowing where your line went.
  • Gloves on. Sleeves down. And you're doing this somewhere with actual airflow, not tucked in a corner with the garage door shut.

That last one I take seriously, more than I used to. Jan made me move my welder out of the garage and into a spot with better airflow after I came in smelling like burnt metal three days in a row. I grumbled about it at the time, moving all my stuff, finding a new spot for the cart... but she was right and I'll say that plainly. The fumes are real. Don't be casual about where you're standing when you weld.

The steps

1. Draw a line. Take a soapstone marker or even a piece of chalk and draw a straight line down the middle of your scrap, maybe four or five inches long. This gives you a target. Beginners who don't have a line to follow tend to wander all over the metal without realizing it.

2. Get your stance set. We talked about this already, but get comfortable. Elbow braced if you can, gun angled about 10-15 degrees in the direction you're traveling, tip about a half inch off the metal. Don't hover over it standing up straight and stiff, you'll get tired and shaky.

3. Strike the arc at the start of your line. Steady hand, no flinching. You know this part now.

4. Move. Slow. Steady. This is the whole lesson right here. Once that arc is going, move your gun along the line at a slow, boring pace. Not fast because the arc scares you. Not fast because you want it over with. Slow and steady beats nervous and quick every single time, and I will keep saying that until it sticks.

5. Watch the puddle, not the line. This one trips people up. Once the arc's running, don't stare at your chalk line anymore, watch the molten puddle right at the tip. Follow that. The puddle tells you what's happening in real time. The chalk line is just there to keep you generally honest.

6. Go the full four or five inches and then stop. Let off the trigger, hold the gun in place a half second before you pull it away, and lift your hood.

What you're looking for

You want something that looks roughly even. Not perfect, not stacked dimes yet, just even. If it looks lumpy in spots and thin in others, that's almost always a pace problem, you sped up or slowed down without meaning to. If it's just one long thin scab all the way down, you were probably moving too fast the whole time. If it's a wide, sloppy mess that piled up, you were probably too slow or your gun angle drifted.

My first bead ever looked like a caterpillar that got stepped on. I'm not exaggerating that, I kept the piece and I still show it to people sometimes just to prove the point. It was awful. Lumpy, crooked, a couple spots that barely fused at all. And I can run a decent bead now. So if your first one looks bad, that's not a sign you're bad at this, it's a sign you just started.

If something goes wrong mid-bead and you can't figure out why, check your ground clamp before you check anything else. I've told that story already but it's worth repeating here specifically, because a loose ground will make your arc act strange in ways that look like a dozen other problems.

Before next time

Run at least five or six more of these on fresh scrap, same steps, and try to notice if your pace gets steadier each time. Don't worry about making it pretty yet, just get more line under your belt.
