My ugly first bead, and why yours is going to get better
Alright. So today we're actually running a bead. Your first one.
I want to set your expectations before we do this, because I feel like nobody does that part and it causes more discouragement than the actual welding does.
Your first bead is going to look bad.
Not "needs some practice" bad. I mean it might look like a caterpillar that got stepped on. That's not me being dramatic, that's an actual description of my first bead, which I still have sitting on my workbench at home. I keep it on purpose. When somebody in this class gets frustrated, I bring it in and show them, and I tell them the truth: that ugly thing is where I started, and now I can build a cart that rolls straight on its own casters. So whatever yours looks like today, it's not going to stay looking like that.
What we're doing and why
We're going to run a simple straight bead on a flat piece of scrap steel. Not a project. Not a bracket, not anything you're going to use for anything. Scrap. I feel like everybody wants to skip straight to building the thing they came here to build, and that's exactly how people get discouraged, because you're learning a hand skill and a machine at the same time, and both of those take reps.
So today, low stakes. Nobody's judging the bead. I'm going to judge it a little, just to teach you, but that's different.
Setting up
Before you strike an arc, walk through this every single time, not just today:
- Ground clamp — clean metal, solid bite, attached to your workpiece or the table it's sitting on. Check that it's actually clamped and not just resting there. I say this because once my ground clamp fell off mid-weld and I spent ten minutes checking gas, checking wire, checking my settings, convinced the machine was broken. It was the clamp, sitting on the floor the whole time. Now it's the first thing I check and the first thing I tell anybody to check.
- Gas flow — on, and you can hear or feel it if you're not sure.
- Wire feed and settings — matched to the thickness of your scrap. We covered this on the tour, but if your settings don't match your metal, nothing about your hands is going to save you. I learned that one the hard way, tried to weld something too thin, burned a hole clean through it, then spent an hour trying to fill that hole, which just made bigger holes. Match your settings first. That's not a minor thing, that's most of the battle.
- Helmet down before you strike. Auto-darkening, which is what I hope you're all wearing at this point. I know the flip helmets have their fans and some of the old-timers swear by them, but I feel like for somebody just starting out, the flip helmet causes more bad welds than it prevents, because you can't see exactly where you're starting your arc. You need that visual.
Running the bead
Here's the part people rush, and I want you to fight that instinct.
Strike your arc, and once it's going, move at a pace that feels almost too slow. Steady. Boring, even. New welders move the gun too fast because the arc is loud and bright and a little scary, and the nervous system wants to get away from it. A slow, boring pace beats a fast nervous one every single time. Every time.
Watch the puddle, not the sparks. Let it form, keep moving forward at that same steady pace, and try to keep your angle and your distance from the metal consistent the whole way down.
Then let go. Look at it. However it looks, that's information, not a verdict.
What you're looking for
- Too much spatter, popping, and crackling — often means your settings need adjusting, not that your hands are wrong.
- Bead too thin and stringy — you might be moving too fast still.
- Bead piled up and lumpy — might be moving too slow, or angle's off.
You don't need to fix all of it in one pass. Run another bead. Then another. That's the whole lesson, honestly. Reps.
A small tangent, because I want to tell you this
I got kind of proud of myself early on because I 3D printed a little magnetic holder to keep my welding tips organized on the cart. Genuinely useful, I use it every single day. I showed it to my son Seth, pretty pleased with myself, and he just said "okay, Dad" and kept eating his cereal. Didn't even look up.
I bring that up because I feel like it's a good reminder that nobody else is going to be as excited about your ugly first bead as you should be. Jan will probably say it looks nice because she's kind. Your kid might not even glance at it. That's fine. This one's for you. The only person who needs to see the improvement from bead one to bead ten is you, standing there with the helmet up, going "oh, that's actually better."
That feeling is the whole reason to keep doing this.
Before next time
Run three or four more beads on scrap if you've got a setup at home, or just think through the four setup steps until they're automatic. Next time we start actually joining two pieces together, and setup is going to matter even more.
