You fix your own jam while I watch
Okay. This is the lesson where I put my hands in my pockets.
Every lesson before this one, I've been standing over your shoulder telling you what's wrong before you even feel it go wrong. That was on purpose. But if I keep doing that, you leave this class knowing what I know, not what you know. Those aren't the same thing. So today, your machine is going to jam, and I'm going to watch you fix it, and I'm not going to touch it unless somebody's about to get hurt.
Here's the thing. A jam isn't an emergency. It feels like one, that grinding noise makes your stomach drop, but the machine's telling you something and it's never a secret. It's always one of about five things.
Set it up to jam
I want you to actually cause one, on purpose, on a scrap. Don't do this on your project.
Do one of these: - Thread the top wrong, skip the tension disc, like we talked about a few lessons back. - Use a needle that's dull or slightly bent. You've probably got one in your pincushion already. - Let your thread tails get too short when you start a seam so they pull up into the bobbin case.
Run the machine slow. Let it jam. Let it sound bad.
Now stop and look before you touch anything
Hands off the power switch for a second. Look at what you can see without taking anything apart.
- Is there a nest of thread visible under the plate? That's usually tension or a threading mistake, not a mechanical failure.
- Is the needle bent or did it break? Turn the handwheel toward you, slowly, by hand, not with the foot pedal, and see if it's catching on something.
- Is the top thread even still threaded through the tension discs, or did it pop out?
Ninety percent of the time the answer's sitting right there.
The fix, step by step, and you're doing it
- Turn off the machine or at least get your foot off the pedal. If you're pulling thread out from under the plate, you don't want it powered on.
- Raise the presser foot. I know I've said this before. I'm going to keep saying it because it's the one people forget under pressure, and a machine will not release thread properly with the foot down.
- Cut the thread above the needle if you need slack to work with. Don't yank, you'll bend the needle or snap it.
- Pull the fabric out gently, from the top and underneath both, working the nest apart instead of tugging one direction.
- Take the throat plate off if you need to. You know how, we did this two lessons ago.
- Rethread from scratch, top and bobbin both, even if you think you know where it went wrong. Rethreading the whole path costs you thirty seconds and rules out mistakes you didn't notice.
- Test on scrap before you go back to your real fabric.
That's it. That's the whole list, and you already know every step in it, I just haven't made you do all seven in a row under a little bit of panic yet.
Where I stand
Change your needle more than you think you need to. I say this every lesson practically and I'm not stopping, because a dull or bent needle is behind a huge share of the jams people bring me, and nobody believes it until they swap the needle and the problem just disappears.
A story, because I skipped this step once
My first real project, ever, was hemming a pair of William's work pants. I was in a hurry, dinner was going, and I decided pinning was for people with more time than me. Close enough isn't a setting, but that night I acted like it was.
I sewed the front and back of one pant leg shut. Completely closed, like a little fabric bag where a leg should go. Didn't notice until I tried to turn it right side out and it wouldn't turn.
William wore them anyway. Just to make a point. Walked around the house like a man in a peg leg costume, very pleased with himself. I've pinned every single hem since.
The reason I'm telling you that here and not back in the pinning lesson is this: that mistake wasn't a jam, the machine ran fine the whole time, it sewed exactly what I told it to sew. It just told me something was wrong the second I tried to turn the fabric right side out, and I had to actually look and diagnose it instead of assuming the machine broke. Same instinct you're building today. The problem is rarely the machine being defective. It's usually something upstream of the needle, and your job is to trace it back instead of panicking at the symptom.

Jam your own machine at home on a scrap, on purpose, at least once, and fix it start to finish without asking anyone. If you get stuck for real, write down exactly where, that's more useful to me than "it didn't work."
