Handing Off to the Kiln and Looking at What Came Back

Okay, so here's the part where you lose control of the pot entirely, and I mean that literally. Once it goes in the kiln, it's not yours anymore. It's the kiln's, and the kiln's schedule, and whoever's firing it that week. This is the closest handbuilding gets to the surrender-you-can't-plan-for feeling I hated so much about the wheel, and I still don't love it, but I've made my peace with it because there's no way around it. Clay has to get hot enough to become ceramic. That part isn't negotiable.

Before it goes in: bone dry means bone dry

I've said this in almost every lesson so far and I'm going to say it one more time because the kiln is where sloppiness on this point actually costs you something. Bone dry means the piece has been out from under plastic, sitting in open air, for at least several days, and it should feel room temperature all the way through, not cool anywhere. Cool means damp. Damp means there's still water trapped in the clay body, and when that water hits kiln temperatures it turns to steam with nowhere to go, and your pot cracks or, worse, explodes and takes out whatever's sitting near it on the shelf.

Test it against your cheek, not your hand. Your cheek is more sensitive to temperature than your fingers are, and a spot that's even a little cool tells you there's moisture still hiding in there. If you're not sure, wait another day. You are never in a hurry that's worth cracking a pot over.

This is also the moment I'll remind you: score and slip, every join, no exceptions. If you skipped that step three weeks ago because it felt like extra work, the kiln is where it catches up with you. I've watched it happen to other people's pots plenty of times and it always looks the same, a clean split right along a seam that never really bonded. There's no fixing that after the fact. There's only doing the join right the first time.

Handing it off

At our studio, and probably at yours, loading and firing the kiln is the instructor's job or the studio manager's job, not yours mid-class. That's not me being precious about it. Kilns run over 2,000 degrees, the shelves get loaded with careful spacing so pieces don't touch or warp against each other, and there's a whole science to how fast the temperature climbs and comes back down that takes real experience to get right. You did your job getting the piece bone dry and off to a safe spot. Let someone who knows the kiln do the rest.

Firings here typically take a full day plus cooling time, sometimes overnight before it's safe to open. That waiting period is genuinely hard the first few times. You will want to peek. Don't. A kiln opened too early loses heat unevenly and can crack pieces that survived the actual firing just fine. Patience here isn't optional, it's structural.

What comes back, and how to look at it

When you get your piece back, out of the kiln for the first time (this is the bisque stage, before glaze, if you haven't glazed yet, or the finished piece if you have), take a minute before you decide how you feel about it. New potters tend to go straight to hunting for flaws, and there will be some. A slightly uneven rim. A spot where the color didn't do exactly what you pictured. That's normal, and it's not a referendum on whether you're good at this.

Here's the thing I want you to actually check, though, not just eyeball:

  • Tap test. Give it a gentle knock with a knuckle. A solid ring means it fired properly and is structurally sound. A dull thud can mean a hidden crack, even one you can't see. If you get a thud, look closer before you trust it with water or daily use.
  • Run a finger along every join. Not just look, actually feel. Cracks along seams show up more honestly to touch than to eye, especially in the first light of a studio, which is never as good as you want it to be.
  • Check the base. Set it on a flat counter and see if it rocks. A wobbly base is fixable next time with more careful smoothing before drying, but it's good to know now, before you're annoyed about it while serving soup.

If something did crack, don't just feel bad about it and move on. Ask yourself why. Was the piece not fully dry? Was there a join that didn't get scored? Was the wall thickness uneven, thick in one spot and thin in another, so it dried and shrank at different rates? Almost every kiln crack has a specific, findable reason, and figuring out yours is worth more to your next pot than a dozen tutorials.

A confession about my own drying habits

I mentioned a while back that I lost a whole batch of bowls once because the dry air here skinned them over while I was distracted answering work email. That mistake is why, now, I do something that gets me strange looks every time I mention it: I buy the giant multi-pack of shower caps at Costco, the kind meant for actual showering, and I use every single one of them to cover works in progress instead. They stretch perfectly over a bowl or a cup, they seal better than a loose sheet of plastic wrap, and they're cheap enough that I don't feel bad grabbing a fresh one for every piece on the table. Nobody believes me until they try it. Then they're buying their own pack next Costco run.

I bring this up here because the same discipline that keeps your piece from drying unevenly on the shelf is exactly what keeps it from cracking in the kiln later. It's the same problem showing up at two different stages. Cover it, check it, don't trust "it looked dry yesterday."
