Digitizing a mini DV tape, start to finish

Okay. This is the lesson everyone's been waiting for. You've got your camcorder or a borrowed one, you've got tapes, and today we actually get footage off them and onto a computer.

Let's go slow. This part has more steps than it needs to, honestly, but each one matters.

What you need in front of you

  • The mini DV camcorder (yours or borrowed from last week's list)
  • The tape
  • A FireWire cable, or a FireWire-to-USB adapter if your laptop doesn't have a FireWire port, which it probably doesn't
  • A fresh external hard drive with real space on it, plugged in and backed up already from two lessons ago
  • Your labeled folder system, ready to receive files

If you're missing the cable, that's the number one holdup people run into. Camcorders from this era almost never do this over a plain USB cable. Check before you sit down to do this, not after.

Step one: check the tape before anything else

Pop the tape in. Play it in the camcorder first, on the camcorder's own little screen, before you connect anything to the computer. You're checking three things: does it play, is the audio there, and which way is it oriented.

That last one matters more than people think.

My first digitized tape came out sideways. I didn't catch it on the little camcorder screen, I didn't catch it when it imported, and I edited the entire thing — cut it, added text, exported it — before I noticed the whole video was rotated ninety degrees. Had to redo all of it. Now I check orientation before I touch anything else, every single time. It takes ten seconds and it saves you hours.

Step two: connect and set up the capture

Plug the FireWire cable into the camcorder and into your adapter, then into the computer. Open your capture software — the free program we installed a few lessons back has an import function built in, look for "capture" or "import from device."

The software should recognize the camcorder as a source. If it doesn't, check the cable connection first, then check that the camcorder is set to VCR or playback mode, not camera mode. This trips people up constantly. It's a tiny switch on the side of most camcorders and it's easy to miss.

Step three: rewind and capture in real time

This is the part nobody loves. Digitizing mini DV happens in real time. A sixty-minute tape takes sixty minutes to capture. There's no shortcut. Rewind the tape fully, hit play on the camcorder, hit record or capture in your software, and then leave it alone.

Don't bump the camcorder. Don't unplug anything. Go fold laundry, go check your bread, come back when it's done.

Step four: name the file the right way, immediately

The second that capture finishes, before you do anything else, name the file something real. Not "video1." Something like 1998_backyard_bbq_raw.mov. We talked about this a few lessons ago and I'll say it again because it's the opinion I hold hardest in this whole class: label everything before you touch the editor. People jump straight into cutting clips and six months later they've got a folder of files called "final" and "final_2" and no memory of what's in either one. Name it like a person who wants to find it again.

Step five: back it up, then and only then look at it

Copy that raw file to your external drive. Copy it to your second backup location too, wherever that is for you. Only after it exists in two places do you get to actually watch it and enjoy it.

I know this feels backwards. The watching is the fun part. But the file existing safely comes first every time, no exceptions, because a tape you've digitized once is a tape you may never get a clean pass at again. Old tapes degrade. Old camcorders die. Do the boring safe part first.

A caution worth saying plainly

Old tapes are delicate. If a tape looks warped, if it's been stored somewhere with big temperature swings — a garage during a Utah County summer, an attic — don't force it into the camcorder if it feels wrong going in. And don't run a tape you suspect is moldy or damp through your equipment at all. That can damage the camcorder's heads, and then you've lost the ability to digitize anything else too. If a tape looks or smells off, set it aside and we'll talk about it separately.

What if the capture looks bad

Grainy, faded color, some static in the corner — that's often just what the tape is. Don't panic and don't try to fix it in post to look sharp and modern. I'd rather you let 1994 look like 1994. Trying to force old footage into looking like today's video usually just makes it look wrong in a new way.
