Running next month without me
Okay. Last time we talked about what's not my lane, and I meant that. Investing, debt strategy, that's a talk-to-somebody-else thing.
This time I want to talk about something that IS my lane, and it's the whole reason I've been dragging you through all of this. What happens the month I'm not sitting across the table from you.
Because that's the real test. Not whether the budget worked while we were building it together in this room with me looking over your shoulder. Whether it still works in March when it's just you, the notebook, and whatever life throws at you that week.
Here's the thing about a budget nobody tells you when you're starting out. The first one you build is basically a guess with good intentions. Mine sure was. That legal pad at the kitchen table, all those years ago, that wasn't the budget. That was me finding out where the money actually went, which is a different thing entirely. The budget came later, after I knew.
So running it again next month isn't a formality. It's the actual job.
Pull last month's numbers before you do anything else.
Sit down with what you actually spent. Not what you meant to spend, not what the plan said, what happened. Compare it line by line to what you budgeted. Some lines will match close enough. Some won't. That's fine. That's expected. That's the whole point of doing this more than once.
I want to tell you about the three months I tracked every single grocery run, because it's the best example I've got for what "actually spent" versus "what I thought" looks like when you write it all down. I'd been telling myself for years that the quick stop at Macey's for milk was, you know, a quick stop. Five dollars, maybe eight. I was so sure of it I almost didn't bother tracking it separately. But I wrote down every receipt for three months straight, and it turned out that "quick stop for milk" was costing about forty dollars a pop by the time I got through the checkout, because you never just buy the milk. There's always a thing of crackers, there's always something on sale you didn't plan on, there's always a little something for one of the kids. Forty dollars, three or four times a month, and I had genuinely believed for years I was saving money by not doing a big grocery run. I was doing the opposite. I had the pad to prove it, and it was not a fun thing to find out, but it was worth knowing.
That's the kind of thing month two shows you that month one can't. You need the second pass to catch it.
Adjust the categories that were consistently off, not the ones that were off once.
If your gas budget was ten dollars high one month because you took a trip up the canyon you don't normally take, leave it alone, that was a one-time thing. But if grocery keeps running short every single month, that's not bad luck, that's a category that's built wrong. Fix the number, not your willpower. I said this a couple lessons back and I'll keep saying it because it's the one thing people get backwards. You don't need more discipline. You need a category that matches reality.
Keep the fry sauce line no matter what.
I mean this. If you're tightening things up for next month because you came in over on a few categories, do not be the person who cuts the fun money first. A budget with nothing enjoyable in it fails in about a month, I've watched it happen over and over, and it's always the person who white-knuckled the fun stuff who quits first. Keep something in there on purpose. Doesn't have to be much. Just has to be real, and yours, and not something you feel guilty about.
Write the new numbers in a new column, not over the old ones.
This is a small thing but it matters. Don't erase last month's guess. Write this month's number next to it. That way when you sit down in April, you can see the trend, not just the current state. Three months from now you'll be able to look at grocery and see it drift down, or drift up, and you'll know something real instead of guessing again.
Do the ten-minute check-in on your own, same day, same time, every week.
We talked about this a few lessons ago. It doesn't stop mattering just because I'm not there reminding you. If anything it matters more, because there's no room full of people to keep you honest. Set the day. Sunday night, Monday morning, whatever works with your life. Ten minutes. That's it.
And if you skip a week, don't spiral about it, just pick it back up. One missed check-in isn't a failed budget. It's just a missed check-in. Get back to the table.
Here's my opinion on the whole thing, plain: a budget isn't a diet, it's a recipe. You test it, you write down what didn't work, you adjust it, and you run it again. Nobody gets it right the first time through, and honestly nobody gets it perfectly right the fifth time through either, because life keeps changing on you. The utility bill goes up. Somebody starts driving more. That's not failure, that's just what a recipe does when you keep making it — you keep adjusting the salt.
There it is. That's the whole system, really, everything we've covered over these weeks, boiled down to: track it, catch what's wrong, fix the number not yourself, keep something fun in there, and do it again next month without waiting for permission.
