The F-Number Backwards Logic

Okay. New module. Shutter's done, or at least it's in your hands now, so we're moving on to aperture, and I want to deal with the confusing part right up front because it trips up literally everybody.

Big f-number, small hole. Small f-number, big hole.

I know. It's backwards from how it feels like it should work, and I remember sitting with my manual the first time and rereading that sentence about four times because it didn't seem right. f/2.8 is a wide open aperture, big hole, lots of light. f/16 is a tiny hole, not much light. Your brain wants big number to mean big opening. Nope.

Here's the thing that helped me. Think of it as a fraction. f/2.8 is like saying 1/2.8, which is a pretty big piece of pie. f/16 is like 1/16, a skinny little sliver. The bigger the bottom number, the smaller the slice. Once that clicked for me I stopped fighting it, I just accepted it as one of those facts you memorize, like which way to turn a screw.

What aperture is actually controlling

Two things, and they happen at the same time, which is part of why this concept takes people a minute.

First, it controls how much light gets in, same idea as the pupil of your eye opening wider in a dark room. Wide open aperture (small f-number) lets in more light. Small aperture (big f-number) lets in less.

Second, and this is the one people actually get excited about, it controls depth of field. That's the range of your photo that's in focus, front to back. Wide open aperture gives you a shallow depth of field, so your subject is sharp and the background goes soft and blurry. Small aperture gives you a deep depth of field, so everything front to back is reasonably sharp.

That second part is the one worth practicing at home, because it's the one that makes your pictures look intentional instead of just like a snapshot.

Try this at home

Pick a small object. A coffee mug, a garden tool, whatever's sitting around. Put it on a table maybe three feet from a wall or some background with a little texture or clutter to it, doesn't matter what.

Set your camera to aperture priority mode, that's the A or Av setting on your dial. Take the same shot at f/2.8 or as wide open as your kit lens goes (probably around f/3.5, that's fine), then f/8, then f/16 or whatever your smallest opening is. Same object, same distance, don't move anything except the aperture.

Look at the backgrounds. At the wide aperture the background should go soft, almost creamy. At f/16 it'll be a lot more recognizable, in focus enough that you could tell what it is.

That's the whole lesson, honestly. Once you've seen it happen with your own camera on your own kitchen table, it stops being a rule in a book and starts being something you understand.

I'll be honest with you, this is the setting most people fall in love with first, because it's the one that gives you that professional-looking blurry background people ask about. Which is fine, get excited about it. Just don't skip understanding the light side of it, because aperture and shutter speed are always working together, and if you only think about the blur you'll end up with pictures that are either way too bright or way too dark and you won't know why.

A caution worth taking seriously

Wide open apertures have a narrower focus zone than people expect, especially up close. If you're shooting that mug at f/2.8 from two feet away, your focus point has to be right, because the depth of field might only be an inch or two deep. Focus on the front rim of the mug and the handle behind it can go soft. That's not a mistake, that's just how it works, but it means you need to be deliberate about where you put your focus point, not just point and hope.

The walnut box

I'll tell you about a time this bit me on something that mattered to me. I'd spent about a month building a walnut box in the shop, dovetail joints, the whole thing, and I was proud of it. I went to photograph it to show Tami and a couple other people, and the pictures were bad. Not out of focus bad, just ugly. Hard black shadows cutting across the grain, blown out highlights on the finish. I almost didn't show anyone.

Turned out the problem wasn't my aperture or my focus at all, it was the shop light, a single bulb throwing hard shadows straight down. I built a cheap diffuser out of an old bedsheet stretched over a frame and put it between the light and the box, and the difference was immediate. Soft, even light, and suddenly the aperture and depth of field choices I'd been making actually showed up the way I wanted them to.

Point being, aperture controls a real and important thing, but it's not the only thing. Bad light will ruin a technically correct photo just as fast as the wrong f-stop will. Keep both in your head at once.
