Running the volume math before you fill a bed
Last time I told you to buy the good soil and cheap out on everything else. Today's lesson is the practical half of that, and it's the part people skip because it's just math and nobody wants to do math before they get to build something.
Here's what actually happens if you skip it. You dig your bed frame, you eyeball how deep it looks, you figure you'll buy "some bags" of soil, and then you're standing at the store trying to guess how many bags "some" is. I've done this. I built a bed a foot too deep the first time because I'd read that deeper is better for root crops and didn't stop to think about what that meant in cubic feet. Sounded reasonable on paper. Turned into eleven wheelbarrow loads and a second trip to Macey's for more bags because I ran out with the bed a third full. Kept the bed. Still use it. But I run the numbers first now, every time, no exceptions.
The math, actually
It's one formula. Length times width times depth, all in feet, gives you cubic feet. Divide by 27 to get cubic yards if you're buying bulk. That's it. That's the whole trick, and it takes about ninety seconds if you've got the bed dimensions in front of you.
Say you're building a 4-by-8 bed, 12 inches deep (1 foot). That's 4 x 8 x 1 = 32 cubic feet. A standard bag of garden soil is usually 1.5 cubic feet, so you're looking at roughly 21-22 bags. Bump the depth to 18 inches for root crops and you're at 48 cubic feet, closer to 32 bags. That difference between 12 and 18 inches doesn't look like much when you're standing there with a tape measure. It's a full pallet of soil difference in practice.
Steps, if you're doing this at home:
- Measure the actual bed, not the plan. Lumber isn't always exactly what the label says, and if you're reusing scrap or old windows for the frame (which I'd encourage — spend the money on soil, not structure), your dimensions might be a little odd. Measure what you built, not what you meant to build.
- Decide depth by crop, not by impulse. Lettuce and spinach are fine in 6-8 inches. Carrots and other root crops want 12-18 inches or they'll fork and stunt. Go back to lesson three if you need a refresher on what you're actually growing, because that decision drives this whole calculation.
- Do the multiplication before you order anything. Length x width x depth, all in feet. If your depth is in inches, divide by 12 first. Write the number down. Don't round up "to be safe" without knowing what you're rounding.
- Add a little for settling. Bagged soil compresses once it's watered in, usually by ten to fifteen percent over the first month. If your math says 30 cubic feet, buy closer to 33-34. You'd rather have half a bag left over than be short in July.
- Check bulk pricing if you're over a cubic yard. Somewhere around 27 cubic feet, bagged soil stops being the cheap option. A lot of the landscape supply yards in the valley will deliver bulk soil by the yard, and it's usually cheaper per cubic foot once you're filling more than one bed. Worth a phone call before you load up a cart with forty bags.
Where people actually get burned
The mistake isn't usually the math itself. It's skipping it because the bed "looks about right." I get it, doing the multiplication feels like homework when you just want to get dirt in the ground. But the fourteen jars of green beans I lost my first summer taught me something that applies here too, even though it was a different kind of mistake entirely. I didn't vent that pressure canner long enough, trusted my gut over the actual process, and the seals failed on every jar. Different problem, same root cause: skipping the step that feels unnecessary because you're in a hurry to get to the good part.
Soil volume isn't a safety issue the way canning is. Nobody gets hurt if you're short a few bags. But it costs you a wasted trip, a half-filled bed sitting around for a week while you go back for more, and honestly it's just avoidable. Run the numbers on that before you dig.
One more thing while I'm here: buy soil, not "topsoil" alone, for a raised bed. Straight topsoil compacts hard, especially with our clay content in parts of the valley, and it doesn't drain the way a raised bed needs to. You want a blend, garden soil or a raised bed mix, something with compost worked in. That's a cheap-out-on-the-frame, spend-on-the-dirt situation if there ever was one.
