Hinging the lid and the no-exceptions prop arm
Last lesson we got the box built and the slope set. Today the lid goes on, and this is the part I actually care most about you getting right.
I'll tell you straight: this lesson has a hard rule in it. Not a preference, not a "here's what I'd do." A rule. We'll get there.
Hinging the lid
If you used an old window for your lid, you've already got a head start on rigidity, which is nice, but you still need to attach it so it opens reliably and doesn't fight you every time.
Standard hardware-store hinges work fine here. Two or three along the high back edge of the box, depending on how long your frame is (three feet of lid, two hinges; five feet or more, go with three so it doesn't twist when you lift one side). Galvanized hinges hold up better against the moisture that's going to sit in that box all season. Regular steel will rust out on you in a year or two, and then you're redoing this in the middle of a growing season, which nobody wants.
Mount the hinges on the back, uphill edge, so the lid props open toward the front, downhill side, where the light's already coming from. That way when it's open, it's not blocking sun on the plants underneath. Small thing, easy to get backwards if you're not paying attention.
Screw don't nail. Nails work loose with the temperature swings this box is going to go through, and a loose hinge on a heavy glass lid is exactly the kind of problem you don't want to discover the hard way.
The prop arm — no exceptions
Here's the thing. A cold frame lid, especially one made from an actual window, is heavier than it looks sitting there in your driveway. You pick it up, it feels manageable. You get it most of the way open, gravity takes over, and it wants to come back down fast.
My oldest, Bryce, helped me build my first cold frame years ago, out of a window we got free off a classifieds listing. We hadn't put a prop on it yet — I figured we'd get to it later, finish the box first. We propped the lid open with a paint stick to check the fit, and it slipped. Lid came down right on his fingers.
He was fine. Bruised, scared, fine. But that's the only warning you get with something like this, and I decided right then I wasn't building another cold frame lid without a real prop arm on it before the lid ever goes on for good. Not "I'll add one later." Before. Every single frame, no exceptions.
So here's what that looks like in practice:
Build the prop arm before you hang the lid, not after. A simple hinged arm, one piece of scrap wood about a foot to eighteen inches long, hinged to the inside of the box wall (not the lid) and notched to catch on a peg or a screw partway up the lid frame. You want at least two notch positions if you can manage it — one for full vent on a hot day, one for a crack of airflow on a cooler one.
Make it wide enough to actually catch, not just balance. A paint stick or a thin dowel is not a prop arm. It's a lawsuit waiting to happen, or at minimum a pinched finger waiting to happen. Use real scrap lumber, at least an inch wide, something with some weight and surface area to it.
Test it loaded, not empty. Prop the lid, then push down on it gently the way wind or an accidental bump would. If it slips under light pressure, the notch is cut wrong or the arm's too thin. Fix it now, while there's nobody's hand under there.
Keep kids and the prop arm rule connected in your head. If you've got little ones around the yard at all, this matters even more. Lincoln pulled up half a row of carrot seedlings once just trying to help — kids get into everything, and a cold frame lid is exactly the kind of interesting, heavy, moving thing a three- or four-year-old wants to lift.
While we're on it: run the volume math on your lid glass too
This connects back to something I've said before about running the numbers before you commit. When I built my first raised bed, I over-read the depth guides and ended up a foot deeper than I needed, which meant eleven wheelbarrow loads of soil and a second Macey's run for bags I hadn't planned on. Same principle applies here, smaller scale: measure your box opening before you go hunting for window glass, not after. A lid that's even an inch off the box dimensions either won't seat right or won't vent right, and you'll be trimming lumber or hunting a second window to make it work. Cheap fix if you catch it early. Annoying fix if you don't.

You have to vent, and a good prop arm is what makes venting actually happen instead of becoming a chore you skip. More stuff dies in a cold frame from cooking on a sunny 45-degree day than from an actual freeze. It seems backwards until you've opened your box at noon and found wilted lettuce on what felt like a mild day. The prop arm isn't just a safety piece. It's the whole reason the cold frame works better than just a box with glass on top.
