Hard water, clogged emitters, and the vinegar fix

Last lesson was venting, keeping your cold frame from cooking your plants on a sunny 45-degree day. Today we're switching gears to something less about temperature and more about the water hitting your plants in the first place.

Nobody warns you about this one. You get all the frost advice you can handle around here, but nobody sits you down and says "hey, by the way, your water's going to fight you too." So let's talk about it.

Why the far end of your bed keeps dying

If you're running drip irrigation, you've probably noticed one end of a bed doing great and the other end limping along no matter what you do. You check the emitters, they look fine, you check the timer, that's fine too. You start blaming the plants, the soil, the sun angle, anything but the actual problem.

Here's what actually happens. Utah County water is hard. It's loaded with dissolved minerals, mostly calcium and magnesium, and every time water passes through an emitter, it leaves a little residue behind. Over weeks and months that residue builds up inside the tiny opening until the flow slows to nothing. The emitters closest to your spigot get first crack at the water and clog slower. The ones at the far end, running lower pressure and slower flow already, clog fast. That's why it's always the far end that struggles first. It's not your plants. It's your pipes.

I mention this because half the people in the valley have this exact problem and don't know it. I sure didn't, my second season. It took me most of a summer of watching one end of a bed just fail while the rest of it thrived before I figured out it wasn't a soil issue or a sun issue. It was mineral buildup, plain and simple.

The vinegar fix

Good news: this is cheap and easy to fix once you know what's happening.

  1. Pull the emitters you suspect are clogged. Most drip emitters pop out of the tubing without tools, just work them loose with your fingers. If yours are barbed into the line permanently, you can do this step in place, skip to soaking the whole line.
  1. Soak them in plain white vinegar. Nothing fancy, the same jug you'd use for cleaning. Straight vinegar, not diluted, in a jar or a bucket, enough to fully submerge the emitters. Let them sit for a few hours. If they're really bad, overnight.
  1. Work them a little. After the soak, squeeze or flex the emitter gently to help break loose whatever's still hanging on inside. Sometimes you'll see little white flakes come out. That's your hard water, right there.
  1. Rinse and reinstall. Run clean water through them before you put them back on the line, just to flush out any loosened debris so it doesn't relodge somewhere else.
  1. For a whole line, not just a few emitters: disconnect the tubing from the spigot, cap or plug the far end, and run a vinegar solution through the whole thing, then flush with plain water. This is more work but worth it if you're seeing clogs across the board instead of just one or two spots.

Do this once a season, honestly, maybe twice if you're on a well or your water's particularly hard. It's not glamorous maintenance but it's the kind of thing that saves you a whole bed of stunted plants for twenty minutes of your time.

While we're on it: dry air is the other half of this

Hard water and dry air are the two things nobody warns you about, and they compound each other. Low humidity here pulls moisture out of your soil faster than you'd expect, especially at our elevation, so your beds need more frequent watering than a gardening book written for a wetter climate is going to tell you. Combine that with mineral buildup slowly choking your delivery system, and you get a bed that looks like it's underwatered even when the timer's running exactly like it's supposed to. Check emitters as a matter of course, not just when something looks wrong. By the time it looks wrong, you've usually already lost some growth.

A quick tangent, because it's related

This is a good spot to say: check your fittings too, not just the emitters. My son Bryce helped me build my very first cold frame years back, out of a window we got free off a classifieds listing, and the lid on that thing was heavier than either of us expected. It came down on his fingers before we'd thought to prop it. Nothing broken, but it scared both of us, and I've built a prop arm into every lid since, no exceptions. Small hardware problems, the kind you don't think to double check, are exactly the kind that get you. A cracked fitting or a loose barb on your drip line is the irrigation version of that unpropped lid. Cheap to prevent, annoying to deal with after the fact.

Before next time

Go out and check your emitters, especially at the far end of any bed on drip. If flow looks weak, pull a couple and see what a vinegar soak does. You'll probably be surprised how much comes out.
