Beginner Crochet May 6 - question
Signing up for THIS. Never crocheted, only quilted. Do we need to bring our own hooks or are they provided? 🌷
Bring your own if you have any leftover from a mother or aunt!! Mine were kind of inferior anyway, ha, before this hiatus lol... definitely bring what you've got!! For sure!!
ok so this is func for the beginner crochet on the 6th... i'm assuming cotton, since toni already told me cotton for sure no question about it lol. still team cotton or has that changed since lsat week 😅 i tried a wool blend for a dish towel type project once just to test it and it was a whole thing, dont recommend. cotton holds its shape so much better for beginners, easier to see your stitches too.
anyway is this a one time class or are they doing a series... trying to figure out if i need to buy a hook or if theyre providing them
Welcome! Margie's right, if you've got any hooks tucked in a drawer from your mother or an aunt, bring them, doesn't matter how old or bent! If not, don't buy a whole set yet! Get one size H or I aluminum hook and a skein of worsted weight cotton, that's it. Quilters have good hands for this, you're used to following a pattern and not arguing with it.
Marilyn I still have my grandma's old aluminum hook set sitting in a drawer... so excited I finally get a reason to use them lol 🙈 gonna bring my coffee thermos and hope I dont mess up the first row!
Aw Lisa, thank you for that, your grandma's set will do fine!!! I don't have any hooks of my own yet I'll go grab an H hook like MARILYN said, that seems to be the one everyone's using. 🌷
Cathy I've got some extra h hooks laying around from a phase that didn't really stick, lol... happy to just bring you one, you don't have to go buy a whole set 🙈 Thanks!
An old aluminum set is a good find, they don't make the steel ones like that anymore and they work fine. Cathy, an H is perfect to start, and April saved you a trip to the store! See, this group's already taking care of each other before we've even met. Bring cotton yarn if you've got it too. May 13th, ladies.
Cathy, quilting hands really do help, Marilyn's right about that!! Well, I've been doing continental crochet self-taught for thirty years now, and let me tell you, taking Marilyn's class has already shown me I've been holding my hook wrong this WHOLE time 😊 We're on single crochet this week and my tension is all over the place trying to do it "properly" instead of my old way! Humbling, lol!! Anyway, April, thats kind of you offering up a hook... BTW I've got a whole drawer system of yarn sorted by color and weight if anyone needs worsted cotton for practice swatches! Happy to share let me know!! 🌞
Thirty years of a hook working for you isn't wrong, it's just yours! Fix the tension, not the whole method! Some habits earned their keep. Bring that granny square swatch on the 6th so we can look at it.
Quick question before Tuesday - are we doing single crochet or double first? I watched like four different YouTube videos this week trying to get ahead of it (one lady's channel was genuinely her narrating stitches for 20 minutes, oddly soothing, watched it while Violet nursed) and they all start differently and now I have opinions about hook size that I probably shouldn't have yet!
Also went to the craft store for yarn and completely overbought because Emmett was having a moment in the cart and I just started grabbing skeins to keep him distracted with colors. So I have way more acrylic yarn than a beginner project requires. If anyone needs some for scarves or whatever, come get it, I clearly cannot be trusted alone in that aisle.

Steal away, I stole it from thirty years of watching people who already know how to do things get told they're doing it wrong! Vickie's proof that "self-taught" and "self-taught wrong" aren't the same thing! This week's whole lesson is fixing what needs fixing and leaving the rest alone, in crochet and otherwise!
That line about "fixing what needs fixing and leaving the rest alone" is SOOO going in my notebook, lol!!! that one's a keeper for sure.
Well, anyway, finished my washcloth last week (!!) and now I'm on to GRANNY squares... wish me luck lol. hoping I don't cry during the fixing part but
